new chain

am going to be installing my new chain and sprockets - DID 530 vm- the instructions say to lube the link before installing but nothing about lubing the chain itself. I know it's factory lubed so is there any reason to lube chain at installation? I ran a search and found nothing specific. Thanks

No. But when you put in your master link you will have to lube the x rings that you are putting on. The chain should include a little packet of lube specifically for this. So, yes lube that link, no you don't have to lube the whole chain.

I'm sure some will disagree; I lube the master link with the provided lube of course, but once the chain is on I clean it with WD40 and then lube with DuPont Teflon Multi Use Lubricant. I find the lube that comes on the chain from the OEM to be an overly sticky dirt trap.

Probably no big deal to install a new chain and only lube the master initially. But, I would not do it for two reasons. The lube on the chain from the manufacturer is primarily a preservative. Most preservatives are that and not high pressure lubricants. The second reason is it is so easy to clean and lube the chain. It is almost a Zen moment while doing it.

Yet, reason tells me that riding off on a new chain with only the factory stuff on it should not damage the chain since the chain companies expect that someone will try it. But, I bet a fried chain and/or sprocket at 500 miles, with only the factory gunk on it, will not garner any warranty support.

points well taken- chain will be lubed- also used you're thread on renewing the rear hub, very informative- followed it to a tee. Thank you, my factory manual showed the hub and that was about all.

What kind of chain and where did you get it from? I'm in need of a new one as well.

I figure I'll give the new one a soak in kerosene to clean it then use my chain wax to give a nice lube. Ride for a few miles to warm up and re lube.

Thoughts on that procedure?
