Rear brake upgrade??

Is there one??

I'm going to be upgrading my front brakes to 6 pots in the spring.

Just wondering if anyone has done an upgrade to the stock rear brakes.

Gerry

I really don't see why in the world you think that would be necessary, it works fine, for the small amount of braking it is required to provide.

Just wondering. I like to keep changes balanced.

Oh, and guys thanks for the tip to change to an 18t front sprocket jezus what a difference in rush hour stop and go traffic.

Regards,

Gerry

I do like the HH pads I've just put on, but I'm with Dave on this one. The poxy, twin-pot caliper whose floating design is an affront to me when attached to a front fork is perfectly adequate as a rear clamper.

Cheers,
-Kit

Don't bother much with rear brakes myself

The rear brakes are useful for several conditions. Trail braking, and stopping or slowing at low speed while turning come to mind.

Another use for the rear brake is to prevent cementite formation on the front discs. Hard stops/severe front brake use can cause cementite deposits on the front rotor if the brake is held on after being stopped. Releasing the front brake after stopping, and using only the rear as needed to prevent rolling will preclude that from happening.

Usually you cannot visually detect cementite. If it does happen, it will most likely be misdiagnosed as a warped rotor.

One thing the rear brake will not do, and was not designed to do, is to safely stop the bike in a reasonable distance. But it is an available supplement to the front brake for maximum brake effort stops.

You're talking to the metallurgist. Cementite is a constituent in the iron carbon phase diagram, i.e., it occurs in steel usually in the form of pearlite. Free cementite would be very hard and abrasive to things like brake pads.

So are we talking a deposit on the brake rotor or a conversion of the steel in the rotor due to heat.

For more info just search the net for "cementite brakes". While some of the articles might not pass University muster, there are some from credentialed sources.

Thanks OND, This is pretty much how I use my rear brake, although, with a bit of a down shift or two thrown in.
