On the verge of plunging - a few questions....
Hi all, another newbie from Oz (already introduced myself in the Welcome form).
I really wanted a new Sprint ST but it's a little out of my reach. I've been scouring the classifieds for a second hand one and found some interesting bikes. I've also been researching this forum which has been very helpful.
I'm looking at an '06 plated '05, an '06 and an '07. After researching a fair bit here, the one I'm most interested in is the '06, low k's but instead of factory panniers, it's got Hepco & Becker panniers which although practical & big enough for a full-face helmet, look pretty ugly, especially the mounting frame.
Would I realistically be able to sell these for decent money as the new ones will set me back over $2k and I need to factor it in to the price?
Also, although in great condition, there's quite a few scratches on the bike, the worst being quite a gouge on the bottom of the fairing. Not sure if I'll repair it but I was wondering if any fellow Aussies had fairng paintwork done recently and had ideas of costs etc.
Thanks for reading and looking forward to contributing in the future.
cheers,
Phil

Not sure about Australia. I'd be curious to know what economic conditions are like there compared to the U.S.
But here in the U.S., I have been following used motorcycle and accessory prices on e-bay fairly seriously for four years. It is definitely a buyer's market, the likes of which I've never seen.
Most bikes are selling for at least a couple of grand under KBB stated values. They've always sold under KBB, but never by that much. There are some terrific values out there in Triumphs for anyone in the market now.
Not so hot for sellers, though. No nibbles at all on my BMW.
How's the used market in Australia?

Berto - you aren't looking at prices in Southern California. There are occasionally good deals to be had (my Duc 999S was one), but they are pretty few and far between. The news is constantly about how many people are out of work in California, but they must not be people who ride decent motorcycles.

Welcome to the forum sussurf.
Sprints aren't really selling quickly at the moment that I have seen and most are between AUD $11,000 and 13,000 (05/06).
It is still a buyers market here in Oz IMO but as confidence has not been dashed like it has in the U.S. I think people are just still sitting back and waiting as opposed to getting desperate.
If the fairings are stratched you can get them redone but again IMO I'd leave it until you dropped it and then get it done. Unless you just have to ride a pristine bike.
With regards to the panniers. If you don't like them there is a chance that others won't either but each to their own. If you wanted bags on the bike I personally would buy one with bags as all of the hardware will be there too.
Have a look on Bikesales or Ebay. There are some reasonable deals going there at the moment.
Good luck

Well, actually I am looking in California, since e-bay is worldwide.
For example---a nice blue 2006 ST in Orange, California with 14,545 just sold for $4700, after 31 bids. (That's a lot of bids.) I paid $5800 for my 2004 in June, with 7300 on it.
The guy who paid $4700 got a better deal, considering KBB on it is $6800. Bikes always sell under KBB retail, but two years ago, it was usually 1K under. Now it's twice that.
A 2008 with 13K, bags, the lot drew no bids at $7K, with a KBB of $8450. I think that bike is easily worth 7K, given its quality. It's a heckuva value.
It also depends on where you look. If I compare prices on Craigs, for instance, they are higher generally. But I never know if they sell. On e-bay, the completed sales give a great snapshot of actual value. And boy, are they down...
Sales are way off, too. People aren't buying much. But if you want to buy, the time is right.

Thanks Dave.
As mentioned in my opening post I've done all the prelims.
It's hard to equate values over there to here but in my opinion values here compared to new dealer prices are quite high, allowing wear & tear & no warranty with the sale.
It does seem , however that bikes are not selling.

Sorry I missed that in your first post mate, I was on auto pilot!
New bikes are selling very well indeed in Brisvagas, my dealer moves over 110 bikes every month. (not all Triumph though).
cheers

sussurf welcome to the forum, I have had my sprint for a couple of months now and I dont think there is any other bike like it.
Im not to sure about second hand ones as the dealer that I bought my 09 model from didnt have any second hand ones, but I can say this though which ever one you get you will really enjoy it.
When you do get it as I live in Sydney as well give me a yell and we will organise a ride.
