New Member with a Question

Anybody know why my Sprint ST would stick between 1st and 2nd gear when the bike is cold?

Welcome! I'll shoot this over to the Sprint forum. You may want to let us know more about you and your bike as it adds a bit of the personal touch.

Welcome.

In addition to your particulars, it would be helpful if you could include a description of what you have already done to try and fix your bike problem. You may as well also include how many miles since the last oil change, brand and weight oil, riding boots, and if you understand how to work on bikes, or are seeking info prior to contacting your dealer.

Don't know what year your bike is but start with changing the oil and making sure your clutch is adjusted correctly.

More info

Thanks for the feedback. Here's a few more details. The bike has about 1200 miles on it. The dealer changed the oil to 15W50 Synthetic at 600 miles. The sticking only seems to happen when I'm first on the bike. After a mile or two, I don't have the problem.

I have to take it in to the dealer for a recall on a part soon, so I can have them take a look when I'm there. I was just curious if it was a problem others were having.

Thanks again for the responses!

Dump the full synth the dealer put in out of your crankcase now, change the filter and put in some quality semi-synth 10-40 and finish breaking the bike in for at least another thousand miles then switch to full synth.
The shifting will sort itself out, hopefully. :-)
At least it did on my bike.

Welcome

Hi and welcome to TriumphRat.net and the Sprint forum Gigem1982

Don and I are in the habit of asking all our new members to please have a read of our forum stickies.

As Oldndumb asked it would be helpful if you have any more information.
Do you know what oil the dealer used? It would be good to know.

You should also take note that these gearboxes like the engines themselves are very tight for a good while after break in and loosen up with some spirited miles on them.

Cheers
DaveM

The vast majority of shifting/clutch issues on these bikes can be traced to the use of a non-spec. oil. If one uses the type (not brand) oil specified in the manual there should be no issues. If one goes outside of the specs. there will most probably be issues.

I have to agree with 4N099. In my case I left the oil Triumph in until 3,000 miles, changing oil and filter at 500/1,500 and 3,000 miles. At that time SilkOLene full snyth was put in and that's been in her ever since and I couldn't be happier with an oil's performance in all areas.
DaveM uses Motul with equal results.

Check clutch free-play at 2mm.

Another thing is the transmission and shifting mechanism. At a stop, if there is an issue going into gear usually a simple second clutch application or a roll a few inches forward or backward will work.

Another thing to consider is that these aren't like the clutch/transmissions in Mom's Honda grocery getter. These are racing boxes with straight cut gears and the whole MaryAnne and as such do have different traits.

better with age

I found it took a while for my 2008 transmission to sort itself out. The break in oil had a very unsatisfactory shift quality and the change to the zillion dollar Triumph Mobil 1 helped a lot. It took a couple of thousand miles to break everything in but all is well at 17000 miles. I do notice that the tranny takes a little while to warm up on those 40°F rides but I always attributed that to cold, thick oil.
