Electrical Issue

My 2000 Sprint St has been acting up lately. It has 24k miles, and is stock except for the carbon fiber exhaust. But I will go to turn the key hit the start button and something clicks, then I loose all power even the clock resets. When that occurs all I do is shake the handlebars for a few seconds and all of the sudden I have power again.

Another strange issue is the fact that when it finally is able to turn over it wont keep an idle... I have to give it a bit of throttle no matter if it is hot or cold out. But once I rev it for a second or two It idles and runs normal. Could this be caused by the spark plugs needing to be replaced?

NOTE: Both of these issues started at the same time.

The bike was dropped by a previous owner.. But I have been riding it for the past few months without any issues. Well the little light above the headlights will flicker on and off from time to time.

If anyone has had a similar issue please share. Thanks

Sounds like a loose battery terminal. Unbolt them, clean them and reassemble then try again. Either that or wiggle the kill switch and see if you have some sort of short there.

Pull the seat and tank. Disconnect every spade terminal in sight (one at a time), clean off all the old grease smeared on the terminals at the factory 9 years ago. Clean up and re-coat with new grease and re- assemble. Pay particular attention to all the earthing points (battery to starter motor via solenoid), clean up with wet and dry paper and coat with new grease.

The factory 'fitted' grease will break down over time and can actually cause short circuts or interrupt current flow across the terminal connectors.

Try to measure battery voltage, while engine is starting. If it's less than 12V, means that your battery is out, or starter have a short-circuit.
