Fuel leak

My 2001 ST has just had an episode.
Whilst waiting patiently at the traffic lights I noticed a strong smell of petrol. Then on the next right hander i noticed by the fact i was going sideways that most of the petrol was now on the rear tyre.
From what i could see in the pouring rain - the fuel seemed to be p*ssing out of one of the vent pipes and also dropping on the exhaust pipe.
Anyone had similar or any ideas?
Many thanks

1./ That sucks.
2./ Check the bottom of the fuel level sender. I had to replace mine as the epoxy that surrounds the wire that enters the middle of the sender shrank/ contracted and a small leak developed. On the replacement, I pre-emptively applied some additional fuel-safe 2 part epoxy around the area.
3./ Not sure about the vent pipes / tubes you mentioned, but perhaps other smarter folks on the Board can comment...

Thanks Lugan - if it ever stops raining and i manage to get it up the hill to my house - I will have a look - apparantley there is a known problem with the fuel pipes which was the subject of a recall

Thankyou again

It'll probably be the fuel line connector - either broken or come loose where it connects to underside of the tank.
The fuel pump is inside the tank so the line is pressurised while the ignition is on and can spray a lot of petrol out.
You've obviously already concluded - dont ride it like that unless you want to become a human torch

Also a bit of light reading for you: http://www.triumphrat.net/sprint-for...-line-fix.html

Although I'm guessing the leak is the usual suspect (the female return fuel fitting), there was a recall back around 2002 for a batch of bad fuel senders.

However, they just leaked a little bit, like Lugan described. The flow you have sounds like the FF.

There are several threads on the subject in this forum.

The FF recall did not replace the part that tends to break. Instead, it called for the replacement of the plastic male fittings with metal ones. You will know yours was done if the 90 degree fitting is Red in color.

fuel leak

if there's actually an untouched 2001 out there with the original fuel connectors, I'd be surprised. Go for the metal fittings from Team Triumph or others. I've not been afraid of mine since. Joy to take the tank off now....http://www.triumph1.com/sprint_st.htm
