Hey all,

I was wondering if someone has tuned a 02+ Sprint with an aftermarket can and K&N filter. Mine is setup with a Staintune high-pipe and K&N filter. It's great, but when I'm really running it it has a bad habit of backfiring on decel and engine breaking. The shop says it's not hurting the motor, but I know she's not running right. They have the equipment, but haven't tuned a Sprint yet so no maps from them.

I've inquired to the tuneboy site, but they probably get swamped with requests - no answer yet. I also looked on the T595 site, but the descriptions for the tunes are so varied I'm reticent to use any of them. Any suggestions?

If anyone has a similar setup I'd appreciate the help. My guess is I just need a tune that's richer across the map - when she's cold she runs just fine with no popping.

Thanks in advance!

Scottius,

I have an '03 Sprint ST (in the faster SILVER), and am running the factory stainless "race can", and a K&N, and have gone to the 18T front sprocket. Please do yourself a BIG favor, and order up a TUNEBOY with the TUNE EDIT. The best $300 you'll ever spend. I downloaded (from that "other" Triumph site) the "PK Sprint tune", and installed same in my Sprint's "brain" last fall.

What a difference! A completely different (and BETTER) bike - no backfires, smooth power, and as a bonus, the richer fueling runs MUCH COOLER here in Phoenix, AZ!!!
It was 108 deg. yesterday - bike didn't care one bit.

Note: the PK tune will drop your gas mileage to ~41MPG. It used to get ~46MPG, but it ran like *****. A good trade-off, IMO.

Tune #10130 if you don't have a California Spec model (air injection) is for 'Aftermarket pipe.

Tune #10131 is the same tune WITH air injection.

Here is a list of Available Tunes Sprint 'RS'.

There is a 'Custom Tune' (Tweaked #10130) in the T595 knowledge base that seems very popular.

Knolege Base Page

You will of course need to purchase a Tune Boy Cable and Tune Edit Software to use them. There is also a tune there from Wayne McDonald who makes the Tune Boy and isn't a bad racer as well so I might be tempted to try his tune first after trying the 'Standard' tune of course.

In the mean time you might want to put the 'Stock' air filter back in. I run a Two Bro's pipe with the air injection and stock air filter with the Triumph 'Off Road' tune (circa 2003) and mine runs fine. It does back fire a little on decelleration, but only slightly. I'm sure the K&N is leaning out the mixture further and making it pop more. The Triumph tune is still a bit lean, probably to help with mileage. K&N filters SUCK (literally) anyway and I wouldn't run one on an engine I plan on putting many miles on. The article that proved they let dirt into an engine is not up right now. I bet K&N had a hand in that change! But here is a site that shows they don't really make any 'real' power anyway.

K&N and Power Gains

Thanks for the inputs so far.

Gary - I downloaded the 10130PKpower and 10130PKtour maps from "that other site" - which did you use? MPG is not so much of a concern - would rather have a sweet running machine.

Some fellow RAT members of my pack have the stuff to do this and I'm trying to coordinate that. If that doesn't work, well, there's always good old pay pal.

Scottius,

I'm running the "10130PK power" tune. I'd like to see how the "tour" tune does, but the bike has been running so well that I haven't wanted to mess with it!

I did have to tweek the "idle A/F ratio" setting to get a nice smooth idle - I enriched it to "13.25", effectively turning off my O2 sensor function.

If your buddies already have Tunboy, you should be able to purchase a password "key" from Wayne M. that will let you download tunes into your bike for ~$150. The key matches your bike's ECU to the tune-edit program.

I have a question gentlemen,
My RS has a Staintune can but has no decel backfiring problems at all. Runs strongly to an indicated 10,000 and maintains a temp of about 82-84C unless in city stop-start.
With regard to re-tune I'm tempted to leave well enough alone. Would many of you agree?

Do you have an aftermarket filter? If not, that'll help keep things more rich. Also, the fuel up here in OR is cut with fun additives that cause things to run more lean. Not sure what your gas is like in AUS - you pay enough for it - it better be da kine!

However, I was wondering if the best fix would be to try the stock filter again. I'm not worried about K&Ns - I ran them on my dirt bikes and had no issues. But since it won't breathe as well it'll richen things up a bit. Hmmm...

When I first put my Two-Bro's pipe on I ran the stock tune (obviously) for a while. I had no issues with the stock tune and the 'Race' pipe and NO popping on deceleration as well. Having the 'Off Road' tune really makes the response better in the lower revs and you do notice a power increase throughout the rest of the range. That being said it does seem strange that when it's on a lean stock tune they don't pop on deceleration, but with an off road tune they do and most people will tell you it's because of the tune still being lean in spots.

Steve,

If you're happy with the way it runs now, I wouldn't mess with it (not broke = don't fix!). Maybe you folks "down under" get a different tune and/or have better gas...

Scottius,

Here in PHX, we also are forced to run the jive-a** oxigenated fuel, which causes a lean(er) A/F ratio. I think that's why I had to richen up the PKpower tune at idle.

thanks guys, yeah I side with the "aint broke = don't fix it" philosophy.
I use Shell 95 octane at a bit over $1 a litre which sounds dear to our american friends but cheap to europeans. I think the quality if probably good by world standards. Most of the cost is in the (surprise surprise) tax structure.
Our diesel on the other hand is ***** (high particulates after ignition and high sulphur I believe) and due to change to Euro quality in 2007. That's when I'll entertain getting a turbo-diesel car
