Hello all,

This is my first post out here even though I read a lot of the material often. I currently own a 1998 Speed Triple 885cc that I thoroughly enjoy but it doesn't work well for my wife so I'm considering purchasing a 2001 Sprint.

I owned a '98 and '99 VFR and she really enjoyed the passenger accomodations on it. I figure the Sprint is very similar so I'd be in with this one. Here's what I have found -
2001 Triumph Sprint ST, 21,000 miles, Tall windscreen, Throttlemister, saddlebags in the British Racing Green color for $5295. The previous owner was sloppy at slow speeds so both hard bags have scratches (few on the left, many on the right bag). I buy motorcycles to ride them, I'm not into collecting them so I'm not too concerned with looks. I will likely sell my S3 if I purchase this bike.

Questions:

Is this a reasonable deal? From what I see within the market (cycle trader, ebay), it seems in line. I'll have to travel about 3 hours for it and it's at a dealership. He says the price is flexible.

Are there any recalls or maintenance items that I should be particularly concerned about (It is at a Triumph dealer so I would hope the VIN has been ran and recalls have been performed, I know I've had 3 or more for my S3)?

Are there any easy fixes for the scratches on the bags if I do want to fix them (stickers, black spray paint, etc...)?

How much are top boxes from Triumph for these bikes and are they widely available? My closest Triumph dealer is about 45 miles away and they are not incredibly reliable at getting accessories.

Any help that any of you can provide would be very welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Deal seems in the ball park - wouldn't be getting screwed.

The dealer should be able to help you with the recall by looking up your VIN - for some reason I thought I had a couple fuel connectors replaced that were defective, but don't recall if they were "officially recalled".

As far as a Triumph top box (A9508004-colour), they run around $500 and then you have to get the Triumph luggage rack (p/n A9508014) for the st which is in the $175 neighborhood. Check out

http://www.triumphnet.com/ and search the ST accessories for the price information on the Triumph goodies.

I have the Triumph luggage rack and a Givi top box with hardware to go on the rack (~$250 for the box and $100 for the hardware).

I think replacement painted pannier lids are available for purchase retail, or are often times listed on ebay similar to this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

hope this helps some

Hi Ndala,
The price seems a bit high to me. I think if you look around you could do better. BUT if this bike is talking to you and it is in good shape.........
I still think the price is a bit high.
Offer $4200

I think you ought to come out to Colorado to get a Sprint and leave me your Speed Triple :-D

Seriously, I'd try to get a better price, that seems high given there's the new 05 model that'll have folks swapping the older version for.

I think the price sounds a little high for the miles and year and dings.
If I were you I would look in either

NADA Guides
or CYCLETRADER
to get a better feel for what a potential used bike is worth. One can find a nice used Triumph fairly cheap IMO. But here in Florida there are lot of bikes. For instance how far are you from this one...? Seems like a good deal offer $5400. Bring cash.

I have a 2001 in great shape....with less miles. If I was to buy mine right now in the shape it's in, I might go to mid $5K's... Both my seat of the pants guess, and my NADA lookup think your price is just a bit high....but not toooo high. Something in the mid to high $4Ks sound more reasonable....

I just picked up a '99 ST on ebay for $4450. It has less than 4K miles, has hard bags and CF slipon. Was "the wife's bike", and will technically be "my wife's bike" in my garage when I'm not commuting on it. The bike appears to be flawless.

So, is this '01 a good deal, I would say only for $1k less...
