I am also getting some minor chattering in the motor/front sprocket area. I get it when in gear coasting, or light engine braking. Nothing feels bad, and the noise disappears if I apply the clutch. Front sprocket is tight, chain is adjusted and lubed.
At this point, it's just an annoyance. I wouldn't mind finding out what it is, determining if it's acceptable or not, and fixing it if it's not acceptable. Kind of a peace of mind thing

sounds like a tight spot in the chain. I am betting its time for chain replacement at minimum

The chain does like to "bounce" rythmically when I have it on the centerstand and am lubing it.
Sprockets are in very good shape.

I live in Airdrie,Alberta which is very close to Calgary.I have basically owned and rebuilt RZ's and Rd400's most of my riding days.I presently own a 77'Rd400 and just bought a 2006 Triumph Sprint St about a month ago.
The problem is that there is a chattering aound 3-4000rpm with my used Sprint and I am not sure what it is?It has 20,000km's on it and have never really owned a bigger Sport touring bike as such. The sprockets are in excellent shape and the chain seems alright.I re-torqued the front sprocket to 132nm and adjusted the slack of the drive chain as best as I saw fit.I will replace the chain this weekend but not quite sure what the dealers have to offer until I get there.
Not sure what to check next?Almost sounds like the timing chain?
I just want to ride..... it's really frustrating, It's like driving your brand new car with 3rd gear missing......
Any ideas?

How old is the chain?

I recently thought I was going to have to get rid of my 06 Sprint with 28,000 mi on it. There was terrible noise from around the front sprocket area under acceleration, particularly in 2nd gear. I figured that the transmission was toast. I had faithfully maintained the chain and even checked it carefully at 24,000 miles. I had done the measurement specified in the service manual and the chain came up "good." Now, 4000 miles later, I found that the chain was quite loose and had developed some tight spots. I had heard of tight spots but had no first hand experience with them. Now I know what a tight spot is. It's not subtle. Anyway, a new chain did wonders. No more noise, and the bike shifts more smoothly than ever. I learned that a chain can deteriorate quickly once it starts to go. Replace the chain if in doubt. A chain failure can be deadly.

my friend is dropping by today with the rivit tool needed to install a new chain.I just purchased the bike so it's hard to tell what shape it's in , but I can feel a few tight spots. It's a D.I.D 50 VM that's currently on the bike.. I'm not sure what type of chain to buy, but I figure I'll start with a chain replacement.
