Hi All

just bought a Triumph Carbon Off Road Can from ebay for my 03 ST.

Some Questions:

Will I need a remap from my dealer?
What if I don't remap?
Any idea on cost? (UK pounds if poss)
When it comes to its annual test (MOT) will it fail with Carbon can on? If I temp replace with original can for test will the Carbon remap be OK for running the bike until I get the Carbon can back on?

Why have I asked so many questions?!!

thanks all

Need Remap? Yes

If you don't remap it will be running really lean

Cost? Half hour labor is common

MOT? I'm not from the UK, but the CF can in the US is stamped for off-road use only. Do they actually check that stuff in the UK?

Orig can with remap might run a little rich, but that's better than running really lean. Who knows, you might even like the map better with the stock can.

Hi Garry, thanks for the info.
The MOT is for all vehicles over 3 years old and happens every year, mine comes up next year and yes they do check the noise, not sure at what revs though so may pass at idle?
Guess it depends on the dealer/tester as well!!

thanks

slip-on right?

my two bros. slip-on took about 10 minutes to install.

not the ideal situation, but if it's looked at closely at MOT (like i've read elsewhere) not that big a pain in the arse to swap it out for a day once a year. :-D

MOT testers vary so much as to what they consider acceptable noise levels. You may have to shop around.

I haven't had one actually measure the sound level, but when I had my Harley and tried to book it in for its test the first question was usually "Has it got the standard mufflers". When they heard my answer ("No, it has Screaming Eagle mufflers with 'Race track use only' stamped on them"), most said don't bother bringing it here, it will fail.

A lot will fail a bike that has end cans without the E mark (i.e. European type approval). You can buy E mark stickers on eBay, but I'm sure not many testers would be fooled by them!

My suggestion is to check with your local Harley dealer and see if they do MOTs or, if not, who they use to do them - they are very used to "non-standard" pipes, after all, there are very few Harleys who have the stock mufflers on them for very long!

Just an idea,
Nigel.

Yup, one of life's evils!

What happens in the States? Do you have a vehicle test of any kind, or can the bike fall apart around you!

thanks

Some states have required inspections (NC I know for sure), but most don't. The only required inspection here in the Chicago area is for emissions. I haven't ever had to do this with a bike, but with cars its a regular occurence. Starts after 3 or 5 years(IIRC) and goes to every year after the car is 8-10 yrs. old. Drive in, put a sniffer in the exhaust, run some routine on a dyno type machine, drive out. Checks CO, and a couple other gases.

My Sprint came from North Carolina, and went through a vehicle inspection before I bought it (brand new). I'm not sure what all is checked, or how often they check it.
