Sprint RS 2004
Hi all. I am new to the forum but have been reading and learning a lot from the posts. Thanks everyone. I am on my second Sprint RS in the last 9 years. Today I went for a ride in the Adelaide hills and my 2004 Sprint RS decided to give me grief. The bike started to miss, surge at times and then run reasonable for a while.Ran poorly on low speeds and died couple of times at stops. I travelled some 200 km like this on my way back from the hills. No ECM light came on during my travel. Any suggestions. The bike was running perfectly before the incident. Fuel quality has been good at my regular servo in the past. Thanks.

Welcome
Welcome to the forum Ian
How is your battery?
I am not tech but I thought I'd ask
We have a lot of clever mechanical types here so I'll leave the technical stuff to those that know
On being a newbie if you have not already done so Don and I would appreciate it if you read our forum stickies.
Thanks in advance and enjoy the forum Ian.
Cheers

Hi Ian and welcome to the forum.
If you haven't changed anything recently (i.e. exhaust, mapping) I'd be looking a fuel (dirty batch) or injectors.
I am not a tech head but I'd start at the beginning. Do I need to say about 95RON fuel or better? Good luck, you already know that they are a great bike.

Thanks Steven. Yes I did get Triumph dealer to change the mapping to the stock pipe tune (I do have Triumph's aftermarket stainless steel can) because the bike was running way too rich (noted from the plugs etc.) I may add my previous RS ran the similar lean mapping without any trouble, with the triumph aftermarket pipe. After cahnging the mapping on my 04 RS recently, I did notice the bike seemed to run better before this trouble started. I suspect a fuel issue , I do use premium (95 or 98 RON) fuel.
Yes these are GREAT bikes.

You may have just got a sh177y batch of fuel.
Try changing back to the Off Road tune as it does suit the exhaust better IMO. I run the off road tune with my Carbon Can and have no issues although it doesn't like our cold morning up here in Brisbane!
If your earlier RS was the 00-01 models they were mechanically quite different and may therefore run differently with the stock tune and non stock exhaust. Just a thought.

You may be right about bad fuel. How far should I go cleaning/draining the tank and anything else? I may have to get it retuned. Thanks for your assistance.

The tank is easy enough to pull but watch the fittings, check for the recall fittings have been done and be careful when putting the tank back in so as not to pinch the hoses.
If it were me I'd run it for a few hundred K's to see if it clears itself.

I have removed the tank before few times so that wont be too bad but try to persist with it few hundred kms. may be difficult as the bike tends to stall at low speeds and at stops and really runs rough at low speeds. I might try to drain the tank and put fresh fuel in to see how I go. Many thanks and I shall keep you posted.
