Concerning the hard bags, after they were installed I was barely able to get them open and completely unable to remove them from the bike. After opening and closing them repeatedly they seemed to loosen up and work much easier. Then I noticed that the handle would actually pop up when I rotated the key counter clockwise like it was supposed to. I think that it just needed some use to start working as intended.

For everyone who says that the mechanism/design is crappy, well maybe. But it does work and overall I am happy with my purchase.

A question about first service: Does the dealer absolutely HAVE to do the service or can you do it on your own? I think I remember my salesman saying that the first service was going to be $350 which I think is crazy considering it's an oil change and checking to make sure everything is tight.

Thanks in advance.

I agree, my bags are getting more and more usable as they loosen up a bit. My 500 mile service was US$128, so 350 sounds quite expensive to me. The only thing they did that I wouldn't have been able to was check the FI mapping.

You're right about the bags working better after a little use. Mine are actually quite easy to work now, better than I thought they would ever be.
As to the service, I did my own. I don't mind having a dealer do the work, but I live 110 miles from the shop, and it's a little far to go to have the oil changed. Also, I usually keep a pretty close eye on the bike, and check it over fairly regularly. I do, however, have my dealer do the other service intervals. My dealer doesn't charge anywhere near that price, btw.

$350.00 for the first service is highway robbery! The oil change is a very easy one. I service my own bikes for most everything. I just don't trust the quality of work of two of the shops I have used. Almost every time my bike comes back from the shop with new scratches and poor quality work. I had a warranty clutch job come back on my Moto Guzzi with the exhaust mounted on the wrong side of the hangers, a spark plug wire routed so it was looped 10" out of the side of the bike, and best of all the throttle return did not work! I take my time, use a torque wrench, and at least I know what work was performed and what was not.

On my 500 service my dealer charged me for the oil and filter, the oil to go to 15wt in the forks. He did a very thorugh inspection and installed a 18 ft. sprocket at this time.

Like I said the only thing he charged was for the oils and filter. All else was given. He considers this service as a responsibility to make sure all was fine with the bike.

So I/d say that $350 was a bit much since mine cost between 50-60.

1) As one of the people who complained bitterly about the quality to price ratio of the bags, I must say they are working in and becoming easier to use.

2) The Warrenty manual for the bike says that the dealer must do the service, however in the United States this is not valid. If your dealer claims they must do the service, ask them to check up on the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. Specifically tie-in sales provisions of goods (i.e. you must use brand name X product) or services (i.e. you must use our service centers) are prohibited. All that said, IANAL.
