I know there has been some discussion about this but I have not herd a good definite answer.

I see that pre-05 Sprints get 108rwhp and 66 torque.

But does the 100cc increase get 120 rear wheel ponies to the ST?

Triumphs site says 123hp and 77ft lbs at the crank.

If you do the normal 15% lose in drive train you get 105hp and 65ft lbs.

This just sounds low. My old 02 VFR got 95rwhp and everyone said it was down on HP... but the sprint is almost 300cc bigger?

Anyone have a dyno of a new ST?
Or info I am missing?

I really want this bike and might be picking one up this weekend, I just need to be clarified on this topic before i get one.

Thanks,

Rob

Oh yea... does anyone know the max weight on the 05 ST?

Actually I think the '99 to '01 ST's were rated at 108 hp crank. The '02 to the '04 ST's were rated at 118 hp at the crank. So you are only looking at a 5 hp increase from '04 to '05. In addition, from the few reviews I've read, the press has said the engine seems stronger than the listed hp.

Thanks George for the weight!!

thfwsf,

I also heard that it pulls harder than the HP suggests.

I heard that the speed triple pulls really hard and get 120+ rwhp. I think its basiclly the same engine :???:

I would like to see a dyno on the ST.

I read in Cycle World or Motorcyclist (one of those rags) that is basically the same motor, but with a different tune. It might also have a slightly different cam. I don't know if that was just the old S3 or the new one.

I too would like to see a dyno on the new ST and the S3. I would also like to see the ST one with and without the Trumpet performance can. Maybe we'll get some numbers from one of they cycle rags if they do a sport touring comparo...

I went from a 99 ST with a race can to the 05 ST now with a race can.

No Dyno, but it's not hard to tell where the difference is. The new "stroked" motor does everything about 1 grand sooner and is more linear.

My old ST had that rush of power after 5 grand and again after 7. The new one starts pulling hard by 4 and just builds in a steady stream.

At first I was disappointed waiting for that big surge that never seemed to happen, then I looked down at the speedo to see "Go directly to jail" numbers. The new ST is silky smooth and deceptively fast.

I'm sure the new S3 is really fast as well, but the feeling of speed on the S3 is amplified by the initial throttle response, riding position and lack of wind protection.

I'll learn to live with silky smooth gobs of power.

Hi All,
The notion of 15% drive train loss on a chain drive is VERY pessimistic. Your drive train losses are in 7-10% max. on the Sprint. Adjusted rear wheel hp on my 03 97.3 with the dyno having a known 12% error. The adjusted rear wheel is 108.5 hp. Now at first I thoguth some was just trying to make me feel good. But 118 hp at the crank -(118X.07) for drive train loss = 109 hp.
So On an 03-04 you can expect 105 to 108 hp. That accounts for the range 0f 7-10%. Losses of 15-20% are for shaft drive bikes. They are mostly attributed to the inherent losses for the chnge in direction of the torque transfer (ie going from front to rear to left to right and back again). Since Triumph left the drive train losses the same or maybe even improved them a bit, it is not unreasonable to expect rwhp of 108 to 113 hp.
Add a can and the correct tune and that can easily aproach 115-118 rwhp. That is NOT small numbers.

I had my 2003 Sprint dynoed recently and it got at the rear wheel:

108.6 HP
66.6 Ft-Lbs

I have a Triumph Stainless Can and current Tune.

I didn't do a before dyno so I have no clue what the true percent loss was and what I actually gained by adding the Can and Tune.

With the 2003 being rated at 118 at the crank, I am guessing that either I had more than 10% loss or that the Can and Tune don't really do anything other than make it sound cool.

"preachp" explanation of power loss is a very good one. If you use a basic 10% loss factor the HP differences between the 03/04 and 05 is not a lot.
108hp for 03/04 and 111hp for an 05. 3hp isn't even something you will notice.

Hopefully someone with a 2005 will get a before and after (with can and tune) dyno done so we can see the real numbers.

That sounds reasonable but never forget that every dyno is different. Don't take dyno outputs as gospel, what is more interesting is the torque and horsepower curves.

Dynos are better used as a tuning aid.
