Well, I am closing in on the break-in of my first ever bike, an 02 sprint RS, very excited. However, I have a few questions about this bike and its enginer/computer, etc. My roommate just got a Daytona and he says that we have the same engines, but I look at his tach and it goes to 14k while mine reds at 10ish, havent had the chance to get up that high yet.
My question is: Can I take the computer from a Daytona and hook it up to my bike to get a performance increase? Does the computer need to be the same year as my bike? Thanks for any help that you guys can give.
later,
aidan

NO! There are internal engine differences that make the higher RPM's possible without gutting it's self. The Daytona has forged pistons, Shot peened rods, Nicasil coated aluminum liners and of course a hotter cam and the computer program to make it all work seamlessly. The RS does not have any of those upgrades which make an 11,300 red line tolerable! The RS is set up for much more mid range torque and IMHO is set up better than a Daytona for real world riding! (I'm going to hear it for that statement!) Funny part the computers are probably exactly the same save for the actual tune loaded into it. There aren't many things on the road that will be able to keep up with it in normal driving with the torque band it has, and thats just at 5200RPM! Get yourself an accessory pipe, (I love the Two Bro's stuff) the Triumph offroad tune, (Usually free from the dealer) and an 18 tooth countershaft sprocket and enjoy the best powerband around. You own probably THE most versatile bike on the planet, enjoy it instead of trying to make it something it isn't!
:hammer:

Pure speculation on my part, and I don't know what the hell I'm talking about....
- but -
My '04 RS is a pure pleasure to ride on the road in real world conditions. I am now of the opinion that if you want a Triumph for the track, the RS is gonna suffer one hell of a beating:
I put almost a hundred miles of rather spirited riding on my RS at Buttonwillow Raceway a month ago. It was my first ride on a track, and I have no formal training. I also RELY on engine braking...... and THIS is where I had a problem.
The RS' engine has GREAT mid-range, but it's max' horsepower and most effective engine braking is found up there around red-line. I filmed my laps around the track with the tach' & speedo in view of the camera. It wasn't until I got home and watched my footage that I realized how much I hovered up there above 8,500 rpm & frequently touched 10,500 rpm !?!?!?!?!
I'm sure if I knew what I was doing, and had the skill level, I wouldn't have felt like I needed the engine braking that can be found only up there at the highest rpm's. In addition, if I knew how to late-brake, I would have been able to accelerate more aggressively out of the corners (neither here nor there). I need to be taught how to ride.

My point is this, I'll bet the Daytona is vastly superior to the RS on the track! I plan to do another Track Day, and hope to attend 'CLASS' at summer's end..... but I'm going to take it easier on my RS during next month's Track Day. Honest to God, it can't be good on that RS engine to hover for 20 minutes at a time between 7,000 & 10,500 rpm! Buttonwillow has about 23 turns in less than 2 1/2 miles of track, so the gear box got one hell of a work-out too.

I'll be curious to read how people who know their stuff might respond to my conclusion that I MUST BE beating up my RS engine by riding it like that on the track. I'm also curious if I would feel the same way about the Daytona, were I to get a chance to thrash it on the track....?

Don't know my stuff yet Fattrat - but intend to one day!

In the meantime, ignorance has never left me short of an opinion :???:

Different horses for different courses!

I'm going for some track training on my RS next week but it's to learn to be a better street rider, however, knowing my predilection for needing technology I'll probably want a track bike one day, and that'll have to be a Daytona (or gasp, a Suzuki).

I'd love to try the D650 - but I'd need to be a much better rider (and 130lbs lighter) to use it to it's max.

An aside, and on a lighter note - all those over 250lbs -wouldn't you like to be a 150lb squid for a day? Come on - be honest. :hammer:

To be able to throw myself around on my bike, and be too naive to worry about injury - just that sense of freedom.

After a rebuilt knee and at 270lbs my riding style is definately on the conservative side - and that's why I love my RS for every day.

Of course the Daytona is going to be a better track bike. The engine puts out 20+ extra HP - it may be the same size as the RS engine, but it is different internally (cams, pistons, valves etc). Plus the Daytona has much better and adjustable suspension, so yes, as a track bike the Daytona will turn much faster lap times than the RS.

On the other hand, the RS will be more of a challenge to ride fast, so it might be more enjoyable/interesting to try to turn fast times on the RS

Chapest /easiest power upgrade for an RS is to get the Triumph Off Road can, and have the appropriate tune uploaded to the bike's computer.

The next easiest upgrade is to lose some weight It is amazing the number of people who worry about shaving a few pounds of weight off their bike with carbon fibre goodies when they are carrying an extra 20 pounds in the spare tire around their middle. :???:

I love it..... yeah, my 5' 2"ness would be
fun, Fun, FUN! if I could enjoy the same 118 pounds I sported in '72.....

Fact of the matter is, my RS' suspension is terribly undersprung for my 250 lb.s. With the help of a suspension specialist at the track, I have my front spring's pre-load screwed flush to the tubes, my rear pre-load max'ed out, and my rear damping 3/4 of a turn out from max. At one revolution out from max, I had rear wallowing..... screwed in another 1/4 turn arrested it.

If I was a rich man, albeit a heavy/fat rich man.... I'd have me a modern 600cc Honda or Yamaha for the track. My God, I had one hell of a lot of fun that day on the track! I don't have the money, but I would LOVE to put a can on the bike before the same upcoming Track Day next month. I love the sound of a good exhaust.....

What I need MORE than "fun" though, is instruction. I need to be taught how to ride correctly. 33 years of various street bikes, and I only learned what "counter-steering" was two years ago (insert silent pause of shock here).

Yeah, don't bother trying to make a Daytona of your RS. I say stick an 18 tooth sprocket on it, a can, a race tune, and a totally after-market suspension set up designed for you!

(They tell me, a Suzuki SV650 would be the perfect little track bike for me..... I wonder if a little twin could be as much fun as a "little" (modern) 600cc four banger...?)
