Stock exhaust tip cleaning
I did a quick search for this and couldn't find anything. The exhaust tips on my stock system are looking a bit yellowish/brown and I was wondering if there's an easy way to clean them. Any input would be appreciated!

I painted mine black. Much better the grayish color that comes stock. And they don't turn yellowish/brown

Spyda,
not owning a 1050 myself, but I would use Solvol Autosol it is a most excellent and easy to use metal polish I have used since I was a funny looking teenager and still use today.
It comes in a gold and black toothpaste tube, I am certain it would clean the tips without damaging the metal finish.
It makes the SS TOR on my Sprint and the SS pipes on my Daytona look like a mirror.
cheers,
DaveM

Thanks for the tip. What did you use to paint them? Did you powdercoat them or do a rattle can job?

I used the rattle can paint for BBQ or other high temp applications. I'd love to powder coat them, but didn't feel like doing all the looking, etc....
I think another member powder coated his black and polished the tips. It looked really good, but I think I'll save some money for a real exhaust system.
Make sure you rough the coating up with some fine grit sandpaper before you paint.

Thanks Dog! How have they "worn" since you painted them? Is the paint flaking or is it staying on there?

I've had them on for about 1000 miles and they still look pretty good. I did have to repaint them right after I did it the first time, but after a good sanding with some 400 grit paper, they don't look too bad.
I'll try and post a pic this weekend. Bike is pretty dusty now and I don't want anyone to make fun of me.

I had the same problem with my stock tips and The easiest way i found to clean them is to remove the tips first. They come off in one piece when you undo the 3 bolts you can see with an allen key. Then get a clean soft cloth (i found an old towel worked best) dipped in turps and rub it on, letting it soak in for a minute or two and then use a bit of elbow grease to get the staining off. It only takes 2 or 3 minutes to get them looking like new. I still have the problem with my IXIL's and this works a treat on them too.

Interesting because my '05 manual specifically advises against it:
"the use of abrasive cleaners such as Solvol Autosol will damage the system and must not be used."
The manual may be addressing the pipes and not the tips.
It says to rub Motorex 645 onto the pipes when clean. I have done this and the Motorex 645 seems to be a slightly oily substance that is more of a protectant than a cleaner.
