Sometimes, increasingly often, when I press the starter switch on my '06 Sprint ST, absolutely nothing happens, although the lights come on on the instrument panel as soon as I switch on the key. When this problem occurs, I switch the key off and then back on and then it usually starts as it should. This problem started after my bike was out of service for a month while some body panels were being repaired (non-crash damage). During that time, I kept it on the battery tender every other day. (Tender is shared with another bike) I also took the opportunity while the fairing was off to replace all 6 relay holders. That involved disconnecting and re-connecting each relay.
Does anyone have an idea what might be going on? Could I need a new battery? This one has been in sevice since June '06.
I am waiting the 6 seconds or so after switching on the key. The fuel pump primes, the gauges calibrate, and then nothing, or then, something on the occasions when it works. No clicks when it doesn''t work. Battery connections are clean and tight.
Seems an awfully new bike for this, but those symptoms are quite consistent with corroded contacts inside the starter switch. Might be worth (Carefully! Spring-loaded!) taking the switch assembly apart & cleaning the contacts.
The problem is the clutch switch. If the transmission is in neutral, there is never a problem. In gear, with the clutch pulled in, the problem is intermittent. Jiggling the switch will make it start. Now my question is, how does one remove the clutch switch for replacement or repair? The service manual shows nothing on this topic and I don''t want to force things.
