Installing crash bungs, can't get a wrench in there to hold the nut

I am installing R&G sliders on a 2000 Sprint.

When you turn the bolt, the nut on the back side just spins, so you need to get a wrench back there to hold it. I got the right one on and am working on the left side, and finding that there not much room to work.

On thought was I MIGHT be able to get a short 17mm wrench on it (if I had one). Another thought was maybe a socket, a universal and super long extension might work (to go out through the other side of the bike).

Anyway before buying additional tools, I thought I would ask how others might have solved the problem. Thanks

I used a long extension (possibly 2 of them), a universal joint adaptor and the socket, but it's a little awkward getting the socket on as it drops down when you try to line it up. It helps having someone else with small hands at the nut end to help guide it on, then hold the bar on it's flats with an adjustable to torque it up.
Cheers, Swamp.

Did mine a few weeks back...It's tight and fiddly (said the actress to the bishop). But with patience and persistence it can be done, even with my chubby hands.

Thing I was worried about is that the wrench connection to the back nut while I was doing up the bolt...would flick around and put a hole in the radiator...something to watch out for.

Good luck mate.

Razzoo, I hope your aversion to buying tools does not include torque wrenches, because that is one of the critical fastener installations on the Sprint.

A stubby 17mm combination wrench worked for me. I have the GSG frame sliders from British Customs.

Is there much point putting sliders on a 2001 ST? I had a quick look on the slider site and there's just 1 slider goes on each site in a gap, is that really going to do much?

The answer to your question is subjective because "going to do much?" is vague.

If we knew what your expectations were, it would be easier to answer your question.

I can tell you that they will not prevent all damages, and you may get scratches if the bike is dropped. I can also tell you that they can prevent some major ($$$) damages, and your bike will not spin like a top on the pavement if it goes down as described in another thread.

I guess the answer is: yes, no, depends. It could reduce possible damage but isn't going to wave a magic wand and cause my bike to hover...

Thanks for the responses.
I got the sliders installed, and used the two extension + universal method.

If the sliders protect the fairings in a drop from a dead stop I will be happy.

I added a ratcheting screwdriver with hex bits to the bikes kit, and am getting pretty good/quick at removing and replacing the fairings.

While I had the fairing off, I replaced the right headlight bulb with a brighter bulb, however I find the clip that keeps the headlight bulb in is very aggravating to work with.

I had a tab brake off of the left fairing (I think it was already cracked) and I was able to fix it with Plastex, so far I am impressed with this product.
