Apologies if this is a rehashed topic, but thought i would ask my first question to all the more knowledgable, than my noob arse, Sprint and RS owners about chains instead of stirring the pot and asking something like best oil to use.

I currently have the stock chain on the RS, bike has 2700 miles on it. Just thought i would go ahead and replaced the chain to start fresh on the bike with a new one.

Anyone have any tips on the different manufactuers of chains, DID etc. what makes you would recommend?

Also what would i be looking at mileage wise, with or without a
Scottoiler or Loobman.

Just picked up a Shark RSF2 helmet, so if anyone is interested i'll put up an half-arsed review of it

Save your money. That chain will be good for another 20K miles (or more) if you take care of it. It might even be DID on there already. I know early vintage Sprints used a Regina chain that was not well regarded.

For chain care, all I do is wipe the chain down every couple thousand miles with a kerosene soaked rag. I use Belray Super Clean chain lube after most long rides (when the chain is warm).

The DID VZM530 (I think that's right) is a common replacement. It's a high quality X-ring chain. Probably set you back about $110.

I went with an RK X-ring chain as my local shop (not dealer) says they hold up just as well as the DIDs. He sells stuff to a lot of stunters, so his clientele isn't particularly easy on chains.

IMO, the single best thing you can do to your new Sprint is too replace the stock 19T front sprocket with an 18T. I'm pretty sure they changed from an 18 to a 19 in about 2000.

I agree with garry...

I have gotten about 20K or better from both my chains...

I use the chain wax my dealer reccommends... I put it on every time I fill the tank... I don't know if that's overkill, but I like the chain life I'm getting...

I also agree with going to the 18T sprocket... a lot of folks here have done that... since you only have 2700 miles it would probably be okay to only change the sprocket, but I have always heard change the chain and sprockets together...

what would a good replacement be though?
Mine has a lot of surface rust from a bad British winter, and although I've cleaned it and oiled it, a trip down a salty road has left it pretty scarred.

debateing on removing it and just scrubbing or being lazy and starting fresh.

the scrubbing i've done so far has not yielded too much of a result. still works ok, but just looks crusty

Just adding my $.02. I added a Loobman oiler on my RS (a UK product). You can run the tubing and braket so you can't even tell it's on the bike.
