i have a 96 that i managed to drop in the driveway on sunday. i was very luck and only broke off one of my bar end mirrors and bent my left clip on. the opportunity has arisen for me the buy some trick clip ons. only problem, i don't have any calipers to measure my forks. so i thought i'd ask if someone on the forum knows the diameter of the forks on a 96. thanks in advance for your help

Sorry no precise answer, but in best Boy Scout tradition:

A standard 12" rule held against the fork tube will give you the diameter if you got a steady eye. Should be close enough for a clipon. Use a couple of toothpicks and some duck tape as surrogate caliper jaws. Keep the toothpicks parallel.

Alternatively, measure from the centre of the top nut to the edge of the fork tube to get the radius, then double it.

1mm error shouldn't be a problem with adjustable clipons.

remember that glass we all took in school... what was it called.... oh yeah.. geometry!

Circumference of a Circle = Pi x diameter

measure around the fork with a string or twine and do some high powered math... and blamo!! you got your answer.

Circumference / Pi = diameter

not to be rude... but i'd either use calipers or wait for someone with a 96 to post up, instead of going on the last recommendations. i DEFINITELY wouldn't eye ball it. can you tell the difference in 1 mm? 2 mm? all by eye?

i'm pretty sure they are 43mm but.....
i don't have one....

At the bottom of this page (http://www.customdynamics.com/headlights.htm) they have a "Fork Clamp Calculator" which uses one of the methods described above.

This is NOT rocket science. Your anorak is entirely optional.

And yes, I can tell the difference between 1 and 2 mm by eye, perhaps because I'm used to the metric system. More than this, I'm smart enough to take several measurements and use the average. If still unsure, I'm also smart enough to find a tool hire shop, or phone my dealer...

Anyway, 43mm, according to these folks.

ye of little faith!!! calipers are for precision measurement. hundreds of a millimeter. is that necessary when measuring forks??? certainly not...

YOU: "uh, hello sir, i'd like to order clip ons for a 42.98 mm diameter forks"
SIR: "you mean 43?"
YOU: "i dunno, my calipers say 42.98"
SIR: "should have used a string"

ahahahahaha. just teasing.... :-D

They're 43mm. Racetech's site is good for finding out suspension info.
