I've got a sick engine. I have a Leo Vinci high mount mapped with Triumph High Mount map. Something tells me that it is only running on two cylinders. Throttle response is weak, the bike doesn't pull hard (barely lift the front wheel in FIRST). The exhaust has an off rhythm at idle (rather than smooth POp POP POP for each cylinder, I get a POP POP silence POP POP silence). Can smell unburnt fuel in exhaust when letting off. At any throttle position, if I release completely I get a gurgle and pop in the can. I thought this was symptamatic of a lean pop, so had the Triumph high mount map put in. Didn't seem to improve any. All three head pipes have some discoloration, which at least tells me it was running on all three for some time.

I've ordered plugs to start to troubleshoot. Does anyone have any recommendations (shy of takng it to a dealer and using diagnostic tools)?

Did you do a quick check by touching the downpipes ,before they get too hot, might give you an idea if one cylinders not running, but as you say start with the plugs and then while doing that check for a spark at each plug before putting it back in ,ive heard people having trouble with coils going so could be your prob, hope this helps and good luck. Was it running ok before you fitted can?Putting an ohmeter across the coils will tell you if they are ok while you have the tank off ,my manual for a 2k triple quotes the resistance reading of 0.7 to 0.9ohms,dont know if 2003 model is different.

the plug cap/coil seals are crap on the 02 onwards motors, they allow water in but dont allow it to evaporate out.......had no end of trouble with them buggers when i worked at the triumph dealership,if you wash the bike you might want to pull them and have a look...........

Agreed. Last time I yanked my plugs (because she would not start) I found the top of the plugs corroded. It was obvious that the coil was not sealing well. I changed 'em out and she ran like a charm.

I would bet $50 that it's the plugs.

For those who had problems with plug caps, does anyone make an aftermarket cap? After reading some input, water in a cap seal seams pretty likely (haven't yet pulled my tank to look), but I don't want this to be a constant issue.

Good question! Any way to seal the coils better? I just went through a similar situation but it turned out the entire coil was installed incorrectly and finally the plug gave up the ghost.

After we pulled the tank and air box and got the coil out there were two inches of water on top of the plug. Not a happy bike. With a new coil and three new plugs the bike is running better than ever now.
