Is my S3 UK built?

I've heard that the 11th digit on the VIN denotes where your bike is built. Mine is the letter R. Does anyone know if that means it was built in the UK or Thailand? It's an 06 S3 by the way.

Sorry, I got that wrong. It's the 10th digit on my VIN that's the letter R. The 11th is the number 6.

I think you'll find they're all built in the UK. Only some of the parts are sourced abroad.

The country of origin is the first digit. On the S3, it begins with an S. That is the letter for the UK.

Here is a complete list for those curious:

1 = United States
9 = Brazil
VF = France
2 = Canada
J = Japan
V = Yugoslavia
3 = Mexico
K = Korea
W = Germany
4 & 5 = United States
L = Taiwan
Y = Sweden
6 = Australia
S = England
Z = Italy

IIRC All S3's are Made in the UK, Some Bonnevilles and Speedmaster's etc are assembed in Thailand as well as numerous parts.

Ditto. Tanks, Exhausts and a few other bits and bobs for the S3 are made in Thailand, everything else is made in Hinckley, including the engine, from first casting to finished product. The bike is assembled there, too.

It`s only the 'cylinder deprived' Triumph owners that get the complete product from Thailand, althought at present, all the Scramblers and EFI twins are coming out of Hinckley.

FWIW - In the US (i.e. info sourced from Triumph North America) the 11th character designates where the bike was built. T = Thailand, J = Hinkley.

My new 2008 Tiger has a T. My traded in 2006 Tiger was a J. I've seen Rocket III's with a T as well, as well as Bonnevilles of all kinds.....

My friend owns a dealership. He has a 2008 S3 with a J, so there are still some US bikes built in Hinkley. Maybe I should buy it!!

only 07 an up twins were made in Thailand though, and only some of the 07's. My 06 thrux was made in Hinkley. It's someone else's pride and joy now though.

The Triumph web site http://www.triumph.co.uk/newzealand/4677.aspx
states that
"All Triumph motorcycles are designed, developed and built at Triumph’s Hinckley factory. "

The australian site only mentions Hinckley too.

How many factories are there and where?
Does anyone have a link for the serial no code?

It's obvious that the webpage hasn't been updated to the latest reality. It's really no big deal because anyone who cares, will do some research and get the facts.
