Strange starting issue

It's been a while sinse i last posted here.

I hope I explain this clearly and some wise one amongst you can point me in the right direction.
Over the last 2 months I have been having a weird starting problem. Everything works as it should when turning the key (lights, sounds etc) but on a semi regular basis the starter turns over but no hint of the engine even starting. The cranking starts to slow after a while and on a few occasions I would get a loud clank noise from somewhere in the engine. The first time I heard this I thought I’d broken something internally.
Like I said this has happen quite a few times and on one occasion my battery gave the impression it had no charge. I stuck it on charge and also tested the battery on the multi-meter and all looked fine. Still it happened again the day I went to the MotoGP and decided at that point that my battery was faulty so I got a new one (DEKA battery).
All good until it happened again yesterday. I turned it off and on again it then it fired up fine.
Once the bike was running I placed the multi meter on the battery and at tick over it read 13.90’sh. If I gave the throttle a squirt or kept it at constant revs the multi meter would read 13.30’sh
Engine wise the only thing I have done in the last 2 months is install a Zard slip on and install a tuneboy tune for a low mount exhaust with no SAI. Not sure if this is the problem but has anyone had a similar problem once installing a low mount tune to their bike?
Please help – I’m stumped

G'day mate!

I think your triple is experiencing the exact same symptoms mine did -- bad sprag clutch. The sprag clutch is incorporated as a safety mechanism insuring torque can only be applied from the electric motor to the engine and not vice versa (e.g. when the engine is actually running). Unfortunately the pre-07 models seem to be made of tinsel.

See my thread:
http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-trip...n-t-start.html

On the upside, you are in luck as most triumph dealers, at least on our side of the pacific, will replace the sprag clutch as a good-will gesture to 07+ spec. Also if you've been experiencing long cranking issues (2+ turns) prior to this, the update seems to fix that too.

Thanks slacker - that's very helpful. I'll call Triumph Aus tomorrow and see what they say.

I had a similar issue too, though only when the cold weather was with us and I never heard the clunk that others describe and associate with the sprag...

It went down to Peter Stevens twice for assessment and they told me a guru from Triumph was on the case, directing them...

They replaced my sprag clutch the second time I put it in. It took me 2 days before I had the same issue again, BUT it hasn't happened since - I put it down to warmer weather... hope you have a nice n easy experience with a definite fix!!

Funny thing is, it started happening maybe a month or so after I installed my CRM exhausts and applied the Tuneboy non-SAI tune... in the CRM instructions it did say SOMEthing about not always firing on the first go... who knows what's at play for me, but I wanted to put this reply up in case it gives any more insight...

Cheers,
Herb

Herbus, where abouts in Melb are you based?

I saw a white speedy the other day with CRM's on it just outside of Eltham while on the way to work - was that you? There would not be many Speedy's in Melb with CRM's so it's a good possibility it was.

Incredible

I live off of Silver street Eltham. I've been riding speedy in the area for the last three years so you may have seen me around.

Here's a pic of her with her latest mods

If you're up for it - would be good to catch up for a ride. Send me a pm or email. Eitherway i would like to catch up to see and hear what the CRM's are like. Not seen them in the flesh before.

It's a shame they stopped using that blue. My orange is no doubt faster, but I'd give it up for that color.
