My tank sucks!

Took my bike fir a service and they downloaded an upto date tune. Now my tanks sucks when I open the filler cap. I am assuming that the breather hoses have been kinked when putting the tank back.

Problem is I am a bit of a mechanical numpty and would like a blow-by-blow account of how to correct the problem. Is it true that the hoses pop off as soon as you lift the tank? If so how can you be sure you put the right one back on the correct nipple? What bits and bobs would I expect to find under there? Pictures would be good.

If I go in there and cannot see a kinked hose should I swap two hoses over and assume they have connected them up wrongly?

Will I have done and damage to my fuel pump riding for 120 miles?

Thanks in advance.

They crossed the fuel lines when they put the tank on.

Remove the tank and make sure the line with the disc valve is on the outside (left side).

Check 'Jimmyheadgears' suggestion first to verify if the lines were crossed or not. If they are not the petcock valve is probably blocked or upside-down. (not uncommon). It a one-way valve that has a simple fitting inside that is supposed to slide up if the bike is on it's side to arrest the flow of excess gasoline coming out of the fuel tank. That valve can get stuck causing the vaccum. it's easy as pie to take off. Check to make sure that it wasnt put on upside down (thus closing the valve and stopping air/fuel flow), if it is just put it back in right side up, if not and it is the problem (you can figure it out by running your bike without it on (just dont crash and light a match)...if no vaccum with it removed then you've found the problem) replace it with a new one. Bikebandit or order from dealer.

Having recently pulled my tank and not noticing which hose went where, I looked around for this info myself. After an extended discussion on the other forum, I decided that the hose with the valve goes on the inside spigot of my '08 (tanks went from plastic to metail somewhere between '05 and '08, I believe). You may be able to access these without pulling the tank from the left side.

I have a plastic tank (early) '07 and had the same issue. Took it back and it took them a little time to find the issue but the hoses were around the wrong way

Incidentally - mid '07 is when the tank changed from plastic to metal

I lifted the tank and the valve hose was on the inside nozzle so I swapped them over. I ran the bike in the garage for several minutes and there was no suction when I opened the tank! Not had a chance to take it for a spin but I assume the vacuum develops pretty quickly. I'll let you know when I've taken her for a spin if the problem is resolved.
