500Mile Service

Hey all,
Do you really need to have your bike serviced by a Triumph dealer for the 500 mile service? I have a hard time paying someone 250 bucks to change my oil, tighten bolts, etc. Thing is the dealer tells me that I will lose my warranty if I do it my self. Is this true?

For the love of God and all that is Hooligan..........NO!!!!!

It's literally an oil change and they "once over" the bike for chain tension/lubrication, loose parts, etc etc.

Yeah I changed my oil/filter myself too, at 250 and then at 500 miles. Did a once over on the bike, critical bolts (handlebar/footpegs) were fine, chain was fine. I have 1500 miles now with no issue. I did adjust the chain a smidgen at 1200 though. Spent the $250 on something else.

I was reading about that and I think they have to prove that your neglect caused the problem in order to deny your warranty. That would be a difficult thing to prove.

The 500 mile service is just a standard oil change plus inspections that you should be doing "daily" anyways. I saw the Triumph mechanic doing mine and it was nothing out of the ordinary. Probably the only thing we can't do is scan the ecu for codes.

They did catch a bolt on the left heel protector that fell off on my way to the dealership.

Looking at the FSM, there's a minor service (which is an oil change & quick inspection) and a major service (which includes not only an oil change but also spark plugs, air/fuel filter, throttle body balance, valve inspection, brake fluid change, coolant change, wheel bearing grease). It alternates between those two every 6000 miles.

You should be able to at least do the minor service by yourself even if you're not too mechanically inclined!
I forgot to mention I paid a little less than $250US for my 500 mile.

Problem solved! Spoke with my little bro who is a VW mechanic and apparently there is a law against making people get their service done at a dealership in order to keep your warranty. Thank god! I hate more than anything paying people to do work that I can do my damn self.

i don't know USA law, but in australia you just have to have your warranty services done at a licensed mechanic, which is just as bad. My triple is coming next week and the dealer wants $270 for its first service.

Don't feel bad When i ask the Dealer what they Charged he said $300 Yea right See ya at the 6000 :~)

You are Correct a authorized Triumph mechanic has to perform any Warranty work or you Void the warranty!

But the first service you can do your self! all you have to do is save the receipts to show you bought the stuff,But to me that doesn't even make since due to the fact..... just Because you bought the stuff and have receipts doesn't mean you installed the items in the bike LOL

Also If you buy the Filter, oil, ETC....at the Dealer, they have you in the Computer so i don't see the need to even worry about saving the Receipts!

if you have a problem they can tell by looking or even sending off the oil for a analysis to see if it was caused by Oil break down or Poor service up keep .They would have to have this Info to refuse warranty service for there own protection!

I would recommend taking it in for the 6000 Mile service Just so they can Hook it up and check for codes ETC... adjust anything that needs to be adjusted What ever, But the first service you can do your self I do all my Bikes my self it's not a Big deal and something you really should learn if your Gonna Be a Biker Dude :~)

You can change the oil and filter in less time than it takes to strap the bike down on the Trailer, once you know what your doing.

One tip :~) break the Oil Filter Loose before you run the motor to heat the oil, just have it tight enough not to leak by hand then warm the oil up makes a big difference :~)

Nothing worst than fighting that hot Factory filter the first Change, just pull the new filter up snug then a touch...you will get the feel of it in time!

Totally false in the USA. Just do a google search on warranty law.

You can do all the scheduled work, nothing difficult about the 6000 mile service. It does not get remotely hard untill 12,000 when you have to adjust the valves.
