Licence Plate Light

Does anyone know if its nessersary to have a liscense plate light?

I'd like to cut mine off to throw off the speed cams, but I don't want to get nailed with a ticket for not having one.

Probably depends state to state....actually, town to town.

I know in my town you have to have a white light illuminating your license plate. Any other color and you get a ticket.

Not sure how not having a light on your plate effects the speed cameras. Here they use multiple strobes and since the plates are reflective they show up real well in the photo.

wasnt there a news video about how spraying a clear coat over the plate makes them a white blur to cameras?

Federal law requires it, and nearly every state has adopted the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) as state law, which makes it a violation to not have a taillight light. Besides, cutting off the light won't have any effect on speed cameras as they have their own lights (flash). You'll just give me and my buddies an excuse to stop you for not having a light.

As for applying clearcoat to dazzle the camera, I don't know what effect that would have. Most plates already reflective paint which is designed to make them easier to read at night.
