i'm planning on doing a chop job on the rear fender this weekend. with the '05's new stub tail, has anyone had problems with their backs getting sprayed with water or debris from the tire which would be a bit exposed w/o the mudguard?

I don't ride a 2005 but a 2004 with no more rear fender so...
But I recommand you to buy a rear hugger... it helps/protects a lot

This is the one sales by Triumph

PS : I heard that removing the fender on the 1050 is a reversible operation so you may try without any risc

The hugger pretty much just protects the shock. Anything likely to hit the rider has already departed the tire by that point.

But to answer your question, I've ridden my aprilia in the rain many times without a fender. Yes your back gets wet. Doesn't bother me very much. I plan to do the same 'fenderectomy" to my S3 as well. Look at how it just bolts on there. Triumph wants you to take it off.

yeah, i noticed that. i also noticed that the new license plate holders that you can buy still have the mounts for the turn signals on the sides of it. and once you take of the rear fender, the turn signals wont fit with the exhaust cans on either side. any ideas??

In fact the Triumph brochure officially tells you that it comes off - at least the one I saw in the UK anyway.

Triumph wants you to take those cans off.

Serously though, without looking at it, I can't tell you if you can do it but I know that sometimes you can flip the turn signal brackets around, so that the panel against which the signal stalk is bolted is towards the inside- this brings the signal about an inch farther from the pipe. I own an '02 S3 and mounted my pipe is mounted kind of high, so I encountered a similar problem. But flipping the mount solved it (although, I still have only about an inch between my signal and my pipe, but that's enough for me).

I emailed R&G (http://www.rg-racing.com/) today to ask about products for the '05 Speed triple and they are getting in a bike to prototype parts which should be available late may.

These include 'Tail Tidy' which is a replacement licence holder, also Fork Protectors, Spindle Sliders and Bar Ends. The crash protector kit for the '97 Triple onwards fits the 05 model.

Hopefully the 'Tail Tidy' will do a good job of sorting out the ugly licence plate holder with accommodation for the turn signals

ok, so i took the fender off today. it unbolts rather easily. i did however take a dremel to the license plate portion of the fender. remounted the license plate holder with lights and turn signal mounts by drilling a couple holes. the turn signals wont fit inbetween the pipes however..... you know those brackets that those round, red reflectors are attached to when you bought it... well, those worked perfectly to extend the turn signals back and now they sit just behind the exhaust and right below the hole in the can. really looks good. i'll post pics soon.
