Custom S3 Suburban Machinery Bars

I read that people are using Suburban Machinery 650SV type II bars for their Speedies. However they smash their thumbs against the tank at steering lock.

I spoke with the gentleman that runs Suburban and he will design a set of bars for our S3's. It will be the basic design of the 650SV II's but with the correct angle. I will be working with him at the end of the riding season here in Ohio (sadly soon) and I will test fit his prototype.

When we're good to go I will let the forum know that the new bars are available.

Just curious, how many of you are interested in this style of bars? Maybe I can set up a group buy. It would be in the Oct-Nov time frame.

Thanx,
Patrick

Aluminum? Tapered? Would like to see some pics when you get it mounted, and a price.

Hmm, I have SM bars on my 06 for over 2 years now. I have never smashed my thumbs on the tanks.

Getting the fly screen to fit with a GSXR master cylinder and Pazzo levers was a bit of a pain. I had to cut out a section of the fly screen to make it fit. No one would ever know its been cut though. I hardly ever use the flyscreen though. Bike looks better with out it.

I'll have to go down in the garage to see what your talking about by smashing your thumbs.

EDIT: Okay I just looked at my bike. I have like 2 inchs between the tank and my fingers at full lock. Have you actually installed these on your bike? Maybe you got the wrong ones.

Do you have the type II's. I'm going by what someone recently posted on his install. He actually had pictures of his bloodied thumb. The guy at suburban knew what I was talking about so that's why we are going to base the new S3 version on the angles of the stock bars. I have a fly screen but don't use it as well. But I will check it's clearance in the process just we know.

Thanx

What a coincidence. I just ordered a set the other day, and he noted some other triumph rider who was going to help try out a custom set specifically for the bike - he noted complaints about the thumbs thing. Hopefully mine will arrive on Friday, I'll post a note about it. I had my handlebars before upside down, they didn't allow full lock back then - was never a problem, hopefully these won't be either.

Yeah I have the type 2's. I wonder if the guy with the bloody thumb just needed to rotate the bars up a bit. Mine are pretty much parallel with the top triple tree.

Like I said i have TONS of clearance. If i were to rotate them lower, its way too awkward feeling. The only way i could smash my thumb was if i had my thumb on the horn button, and had 1 1/2 thick thumbs. LOL

Check out this nice install of the bars on an S3. Its not my write up...but a nice one with pics.

He too has 1 1/2" clearance to the tank at full lock.

I think the other guy with the bloody thumb just needed to move them a bit. ( now that you mention it, I do remember seeing pics of his bloody thumb.)

Jayb, as you mentioned, tons of clearance. I installed mine w/ just the stock instrument panel setup (no fairing). However when I get the handlebar to lock left, the GSXR radial brake lever I have mounted hits the instrument cluster. Tried messing around with angles and position of the lever, not too much luck. Shouldn't be too bad, as the cluster has some play from rubber mounts.

Riding position is much better while cruising on the freeway. Twisties are good too, but it takes time to get used to (I'm coming from a reversed stock handlebar setup).

Yup. That was mine. Did it a long time ago and no regrets. It takes a little time to get the angle of the bars and the levers all just right. But it's the perfect compromise between the stockers and clip-ons.

I'm actually working with them to develop SM2 type bars. First set they sent had issues hitting the flyscreen and guage cluster. Just put the 2nd prototype on and clearance issues are now taken care of. They swept them back further as well as made them a little longer. Haven't had a chance to ride yet but will hopefully do so this week, if the weather cooperates.
