clutch adjustments

I was riding along and my clutch cable snapped. After pulling over and diagnosing the problem I ordered a new cable, and arranged a pick up. When my cable comes in I'm sure that I can put it in, but I'm a little nervous about the adjustment to get it just right. Any thoughts on a good adjustment for my '03 Speed Triple?

Sorry, can't help you on the adjust. But I'm curious, I'll assume it broke at an end but which end? My old TBird usually broke them at the hand lever.

same, it broke at the nut in the hand lever. all but one of the strands broke, but even so it left my clutch disabled.

Well, I would think that after you install the new cable it would just be a matter of putting in the prescribed amount of slack on the lever. Harley's is about a nickels thickness amount of space between the stop and the cable casing

I doubt if it's S3 only. Any m/c with a clutch cable rather than a hydraulic system can fail this way. It pays to inspect these items, especially if the pull starts to feel a bit 'saggy'.

When you adjust the clutch, set it so it engages right near the end of the lever throw, without slipping. That way you can just pull it in a bit for easy shifting.

I think a good rule of thumb for adjustment right when you replace a clutch cable is to make a 90 degree angle between the cable and what it attaches to at the clutch case.

Another rule is to keep about 1/8" of play at the lever end of the clutch cable.

I looked at how the new ones were setup at the shop and you (and they) were right on.
