Break In Question

I've sourced an 08' S3, but not locally. It's 475 miles away. I understand the break in service to be scheduled for 500 miles. So:

a) any problem with sitting on the highway for the entire break in period? (I realize this is not ideal)

b) Is the break in service just an oil change, or is it more involved?

Thanks

Break in service is an oil and filter change. From what I can tell, the original oil in the bike is a break in oil, not meant for high or constant RPMs.

That being said, constant Highway RPMs is a BAD idea. The first 100 miles of break in are the most critical and should be slow speeds with many many RPM and gear changes. This properly polishes in the cam lobes and buckets along with seating rings and bearings.

I would not ride the Highway home, take back roads. Riding a brand new bike that far isnt a good idea anyway. If there are factory defects, a loose coolant hose, bad wiring, its going to show up in the first 100 miles or so.

I just bought a 2008 Speedy too and love it.

There is a break in sticker on top of the gas tank to follow. Triumph has a rpm limit for various mileage within the first 1000.. I followed it to a tee to make sure---the break-in procedure for these bikes is very critical. I think they didn't want the bike over 3500 rpm at first. Have a look at the sticker. Also, Triumph break-in oil is really a partial synthetic. I know it sounds weird but it's true. They did not use pure mineral oil from the factory. They suggest changing it at 500 miles. I did a quick change at 100 miles and then had the DEALER do it again at 600 miles to make certain my engine did not get scored. Three and a half quarts of oil is cheap in the long run. My warranty remains intact too if the dealer performs the service intervals. They also check Throttle bodies, bolts, chain, clutch and other things too.

Z is right. Borrow a friends truck and pick it up you'll be better off in the long run.

I rode mine about 200 miles from the dealer in the rain. Took it easy made lots of stops, also bought oil and a filter when I got the bike. Changed the oil myself at 500 miles no problems. The sticker on the tank says 3500 rpm's but the manual says something like don't exceed 3/4 of top engine speed (don't quote me on that) which is closer to 4500 rpm's. Anyway I haven't had any disasters bike runs great. As far as doing your own service I have done my own on two Triumphs and haven't had any problems getting warranty work done.
