Oil is a funny thing, everyone believes there brand is the best. For me I use Chevron Delo 400 5-40 100% synthetic. I buy it in the 20L can's . In all my bikes I have noticed a difference in just how much faster my engine revs out. I belive its the best stuff on the market.

I used Amsoil 10w40 up until the last change, then went to Amsoil 20w50. I will likely try Motul 15w50 next, not that I'm dissatisfied, but I want to observe any differences firsthand.

Unless I am mistaken, the brand of oil should be irrelevant in this thread...the question was specifically about the weight. I've tried both 10w40 and 15w50 (different brands of each). My general preference is the 15w50, as the engine seems to run quieter, the transmission shifts smoother, and the engine appears to cope better with extreme heat.
My $0.02.

Crap! They put 15W-50 at 10,000km service, recently had 20,000km service done they put 10W-40. They are different dealers though, the previous dealer use Mobil (engine oil) and Motul (other fluids), this mob uses Shell for everything.
I really hope 10W-40 is not going to cause issues, otherwise will need to swap back to 15W-50 after 5,000km.

It won't cause any issues Peter1 but i do agree that 15/50 is quieter and changes gear with less of a clunk than 10/40. I've got Motul 10/40 in my bike now and will go back to Mobil 15/50 when i do the next change. I only went to Motul 10/40 because i got my 20,000km service done and the dealer only uses Motul oil + my bike uses a little oil and i wanted to try something else to see if there is any difference in consumption.

There shouldn't be any problem with the 10/40, you might even get a couple of extra horsepower and run a degree or two cooler
The manual does specify semi or full synthetic API SH or higher or JASO MA. I'd be real interested to know if you can find those specs on the Shell packaging.
There is an interesting, if long, thread explaining some of this at:
http://www.ducatimonster.org/forums/...motor-oil.html
the posts to watch for are those by Georgecis who was an oil industry professional. Sadly he died.

The Shell Advanced Ultra 4 page does mention that:
http://www.shell.com.au/home/content...ange/4_stroke/
exceeds the requirements of the international specifications API SG, JASO MA, and all Japanese and European manufacturers
I'm sure it's good quality oil, but I would prefer Mobil since that's what Triumph recommends.
