dealer 12k service practices???

howdy, noob here!

i recently took my 05 speedy in for the 12k service (work too much...blah blah blah) and found out this particular dealer doesn't lube the bearings, they only inspect them. this is my first triumph and never dealt with a triumph dealer before... i found this odd as i expected them to perform everything listed in the owner's manual.

is this common practice or should i avoid this dealer at all costs in the future?

thanks for any input.

cheers.

I don't know about common but they should have repacked them. They two that I have dealt with here both repacked them.

To inspect they'd have to have opened things up, so probably "we only inspect" means "we did nothing". If they would have taken a look at the bearings, they might as well have squirted some bearing grease on them.

Seems like most if not all 1050s do not need valve adjustment nor bearing re-grease at 20000km. Most dealers know this -> when in a hurry or if not specificly asked, they might skip these as they are the most laboursome parts of the 20000km service.

I guess all boils down to how much you got billed? If they billed you for full 20K service time, but only used half, then I'd be a bit pissed. If you got the service at half price, then you can just decide if you want to take bike in for bearing grease (somewhere else).

I dicided to do my own 12k service. the only thing I had the dealer do was adjust the valves and lube the headstock. I lubed the rear hub myself and it was actually easy....just follow the manual

Greasing the rear hub at the 12K service is crucial. I did my own 12K service 2 months ago and the rear hub had barely any grease on it. I did 2 of my friends's S3s as well and they both needed grease. It's so easy you'll kick yourself for not doing it.

If you have ANY questions feel free to PM me.

I need to pick up the Triumph manual. My 2002 S3 is ready for its 12k service now and I bet I can do most of it myself.

Whats the best place to buy the manuals?

there is a guy on the other site that did not grease his rear and when he got to 15k he did some serious damage. I was scared doing it myself at first but then after i dove in it was pretty easy. I'll posy some pics on Monday and link the other site when it's up.

LA S4- i found my manual online and just printed the pages i needed

It's a good idea to look over the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual and compare it to what your dealer actually does.

A 4 year service on my sprint includes a lot of stuff that no dealer around here does, like rebuilding both brake masters and all 3 calipers, replacing all the fuel lines, removing the swingarm to grease the bearings, in addition to all the usual 12K stuff.

It gets very expensive, very fast.

Think about what you really want or need, make a list, and call to get an estimate in advance *before* you make an appointment. That way, nobody is surprised and you can get the parts there before dropping the bike off.

Just hit 12,000 miles on my 2000 S3 955.

At what mileage do you think the 1050 would definitely need valve adjustment?
I just spent quite a bit to fix my car, new tires for S3, etc.
So if I could skip the valve adj (something I will have dealer do) then it helps a lot.

For greasing bearings, I think it's something I can do on my own.
