Extended Service Plan?

I'm getting my new S3 in a week or so and I'm wondering if I need the "Extended Service Plan" the dealer is offering. This goes for $700 for an additional 24 months, $800 for 36 months and $900 for 48 months. Seems like lots of money. So I guess I'm also asking, how reliable are these bikes??

Two Triumphs and no major issues. What all is covered with the plan? $900 seems steep.

They offer this kind of plans usually on reliable products (nobody is in it to loose money).
There are 2 things you have to consider additionally:
- if you drop bike and total it, you're in pure loss of this money (this doesn't count as "optional equipment on bike" for insurance)
- if you sell it before end of plan, even if it is transferable to new owner it does not add value (despite what salesman have told you).
I passed on it, opted only for wheel/tire protection plan (more of the AAA type peace of mind).

I would not do it but I think all depends on:

1. What it covers/doesn't cover - I would expect the same coverage as the standard 2 year deal.
2. How long you intend keeping the bike
3. How many miles you will ride
4. How many long trips you will do - may be not a factor.
5. How hard you ride the bike.
6. How much you value peace of mind.
I think most issues will crop up in the first year.

Also consider that it's a well sorted bike where most of the reliability issues have been ironed out.

Go spend your money on a new set of leathers or add-ons that you will actively enjoy.

Just walk away from these things. It is not from Triumph (but the sales guy will try to make you think it is). There are usually so many exclusions and fine print that you will have a very hard time using it if they still even exist after your Triumph warranty runs out. The markup on these things is huge, dealer/salesman makes more on them than they do on the bike.

You'll typically have a TOUGH time getting your dealer to cover problems during the standard warranty session let alone the extended time period. Triumph, overall, is very VERY well known to be less than favorable to deal with.

It seems that most people have minimal problems, if any with their Triples. However, I did purchase the ESP. I agree with Dr. G that they are through someone other than Triumph which was not the best choice on my part.

I am an insurance guy so I believe in getting insurance/warranty for a reasonable price whenver possible.

Best example is with my car. I purchased a used (4 year old) Infiniti with about 35,000 miles on it. This was purchased in 2007. It was in excellent shape. I was offered the warranty and decided to get it. During this time, I have had the engine go bad, radiator go bad, and the power antennae break. The engine alone was $8,000USD. I paid significantly less for the warranty. I think that the warranty was a wise choice in that situation.
