The MF'r Returns with a 2017 Speed Triple R

I started regretting letting my former 2011 Speed Triple go a little over a year ago. It brought so many amazing rides and was such a great bike. I have not gotten the Super Naked Fastest Freak thing out of my system yet and I still have my Super Duke to keep those insane activities going. But I decided I wanted to get a Triple about 10 months ago but it never work out until now....

After flip-flopping what seemed like forever I finally did it!!! Picked it up this afternoon. Shop is roughly 140 miles from my home so it was a very painful drive home with her in the back. I did not get unloaded and geared up until 5pm and there was rain out in the "Play Area" I like to spend quality time with my bikes so I stayed close to the Coast and managed to get 65 miles in. My initial impression is the bike rides night and day better than my 2011 Speedy did. I don't exactly baby my bikes during break in but I do take it easy the first 100 miles or so. And as the miles increase I slowly bring the happy power band up higher and higher in the rev range.

More riding and "getting to know ya" type activities planned for tomorrow. Only had time for a few quick cell phone pics........ More to come.

Bottom line is I am BEYOND happy with this bike. It is simply the best looking one I have owned to date and I am sure the performance will be equally pleasing.

The total price delivered to the US was around $1500 and change. If you are planning on buying the full header/3:1 system you may not be able to find them much longer. They are discontinued and everywhere in the US I checked was out. I found mine on Ebay for a Parts Outlet in England.

Good looking bike, personally never developed the fondness for my s3 so there's no longing in my heart when I see one but i'm truly interested in the night and day differences you are experiencing compared to the 2011 model.

Somebody else who shares my love of the 2016 who also knows their way around a superbike. It's bloody great isn't it.

What has your experience of the Super Duke been like? It's on my shortlist, along with the Mulitstrada, for my next bike but the MCN long term test is pretty scary reliability wise.

The Super Duke is really hard to describe. It was very scary fast stock. So I did what every self destructive freak would do and did some performance mods. Full Akra Race Exhaust, Rottweiler Airbox (with Velocity Stacks) and a Rapid Bike Fuel Module. The bike is beyond scary fast now!!! When hitting it really hard without TC on is like a Magnitude 10 Earthquake.

But I love all my bikes for different reasons. I just crossed the 400 mile point on Speedy and I can honestly say it is my favorite bike. It is so much smoother on the road than my 2011 was. Obviously, it shifts 1000 times better and even though I have only hit a few corners and turns here and there the turn in is much more precise and it feels lighter than the 2011 did. I can tell the slight narrowness change as well. The Triple Motor and just where everything is at on the bike... it feels like home. It put 54000 miles on my 2011 in 3 years so there is some pretty solid intimate connection with the model and this new bike is so much better. Can't wait until it is fully broken in so I can judge for myself the motor improvements.

Even though I purchased the bike very loaded I have added a few things and continue to make it mine.....

Installed Pazzo Levers
Dialed in Suspension Settings
Removed Reflectors from the beautiful forks
Installed a EvoTech Tidy Tail

I am waiting for a DNA Air Filter to arrive and I am going to take a shot at temporarily removing/re-installing the Arrow Can end cap so that I can get the baffle out of there.

I plan on taking some proper pictures with my DSLR tomorrow afternoon so these iPhone pics is all I have right now.....

The 1st batch of 2014 SDR's had some issues and it sounds like the first batch of gt's had kickstand tips breaking off but I have 8500 on my 2015 I bought last march problem free. I'm a member of 3 ktm forums and there's some complaining about paint quality coming from Australia, but really a solid platform. The pre euro 4 bikes are easy and cheap to get noticeable hp gains with a link pipe, air filter, akra performance map it feels like it wants to fly. I always join forums before demoing a bike and the oddball problem gets handled by ktm quickly. The gt vs the multistrada, sounds like a win win.

Thanks for that reply. I've had my Speed 5 months now and it is a fabulous bike. I took it out a couple of days ago after winter hibernation and id forgotten how rapid it really is. I also didnt the get leg cramps after an hour which has accompanied every bike I have ever owned which made me praise the sky and sing hallelujah.

I am always keeping one eye on the next bike as life is too short and there is too many bikes to experience. I discounted KTM initially as I am not prepared to spend £16k on a bike, however 2016 super dukes are now on the market brand new for £12k and as low as £11k with 400 miles on the clock. That's an insane price drop for such an exotic bike.

@mjfields, you are courageous standing that new bike on a rock to take the top view photo. :surprise:
A little cross wind and down the Triple goes.
BTW, great photos!!!
What is that emty lot structure, an old loading dock/fort/track???

Trust me, I am well aware of the consequences of a parked bike catching a side wind!!! For the side view pictures I left enough lean that it would have taken a very strong gust to push it over. For the shots from above it was parked on the down wind side of the old concrete structure and there was zero wind. However, the entire time it is propped up like that I am extremely nervous! I need a "photo assistant" to stand just out of the shot to keep the bike safe at all times!

I have yet to ride a Tuono and for good reason--I would do mostly really unspeakable things on it and would get myself into big big trouble!!! My KTM Super Duke serves as my "least" responsible fun bike and I have heard from many fellow riding friends that the Tuono is simply amazing. If I won the Lottery there is no doubt I would add one to the stable!!!

I don't think the SD gives anything up to the tuono, on the street, and it's more comfortable. I only asked because you have some nice bikes and would appreciate your perspective. I demoed the s1kr before picking my s3 replacement, but since I don't trust aprilia reliability yet I won't waste the salesmans time asking for a demo.
