Hey Dave,
Good question. The SV1000 is a nice bike imo. Nice looking. Reliable. V-twin. The Speed Triple has so much more character. Does not vibrate like a V-twin but has some of the similar characteristics. So much power at low rpm.
With the SV, my hands would be numb. I find the S3 very controllable whereas the SV1000 felt quirky. The SV1000s suspension is fully adjustable but just never felt that great. With the S3, my confidence level has increased from a 5 out of 10 to a 8 out of 10. The S3 feels planted in corners and I can easily change my line if necessary.
The SV1000's brakes felt wooden compared to the S3. With the S3, I can trail brake and yet the bike does not stand up in corners. The S3 just feels so smooth when stopping. I can modulate the brakes very easily.
The SV is not known as a race replica. But, it sure feels that way compared to the S3. I have bad knees and hips. When I rode the SV, I would feel so much pain the next day. With the S3, I feel much more relaxed and upright. Yet, I feel more in control of my ride.
The other thing is modifications. With the SV, there was limited choices in mods. With the S3, my limitations are based on my pocket book, not the supply of mods. I really value individuality and I feel that I can do that with the S3.
Fit and finish with the S3 is superb whereas the SV looks sort of OK.
Lastly, the coolness factor is so much higher with the Speed Triple. I get way more compliments with the S3 than I ever did with the SV. Makes me feel good to ride such a beautiful machine.
I hope that this give you some insight into the differences between the machines.
