My S3 is Europe bound. It will be guzzling 95 or 98 octane pretty soon. I the US I took premium. Not that it makes that much difference, let's be honest.
Over here we have a choice of two grades of unleaded petrol, 95 RON and 98 RON, Triumph recommend the 95 RON, which is what I use.... is cheaper than the so called super unleaded :-D Quite how this compares to the US pumps I'm not sure, but I found this web site, http://www.nwlink.com/~vdb/vw/Engine/Octane_Ratings
if it's right it suggests 95 Ron is Premium or 91 CLC.
Also found this site :- http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/R...RONMONPON.html
which says 95 RON = 87 MON = 91 PON
Go figure :???: has bored me to tears anyway lmao
I use high grade as I am scared to put anything else in my bike.
Sometimes I will run 104 octane aviation fuel (about a gallon ) to cleen up the insides of the engine.
Thing is my bike runs best on the 89, but I just dont trust fuel companys. I got some really bad gas in my 95 speed triple once that almost destroyed my engine.
I learned to never ever ever fill up, when you see tyhe gas truck at the station. As it stirs up alll the sediment at the bottom of the tank.
We have a choice of 91 standard unleaded, 95 premium unleaded and 98 Ultimate, I use the 95 because as Lizardbloke points out, it's what Triumph recommends.
Whether the pumps in the US have similar types of gas is another matter.

In the US the Octane number on the pump is generally 87, 89, and 91-93 depending on the company. The number is arrived at by adding the "research" and "method" octane numbers and dividing by two. Triumph recommends 89 and my bike runs best on this fuel. Octane is not a meeasure of fuel quality, so unless you have modified your bike by raising compression or advancing the timing it will probably run best on the recommended fuel and save you some money too.

MCSP3 is spot on. The higher octane prevents pre-detonation (knock). By using a higher than recommended octane in an unmodified engine you are just reducing combustion and increasing the carbon build up.
