Cross Country Trip

This question is for anyone that lives or has travled the northern states. To make a long, complicated story short, I have to get to Montana. The problem is that I live in Pennsylvania. I can not fly because I need transportation out there, and nobody wants to rent a car to a 20 year old. My only reliable transportation is my '05 S3.

The cold dose not bother me. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm young, foolish, and ride the bike everyday. The real question is how are the roads in Illonois, The Dakotas, Wyoming, and Montana? I noticed alot of snow fences along the highways, and chain pull offs. That is scarry. Is this going to be possible, or will I be navigating 2 foot snow drifts?

Thanks in advance

If you plan on riding through the northern plains between now and the end of March...youre just F'n nuts. Today in Minneapolis it is 40 degrees with rain. Tomorrow is suppose to be similar. But come Tuesday night into Wednesday we are expecting rain changeining to snow and a drastic temp drop to around 0 degrees with wind chills of -40 degrees below 0. This will feel like an 80 degree temp change in one night! The weather can change in this part of the nation in a NY minute. I really don't recommend it. It's just not safe. I don't care how young and wreckless you are, nobody lives being outside for any period of time in that type of weather. Give it a couple months. Be smart.

keep in mind, in this area the weather moves westward. The dakotas and montana will be just as bad.

I expected, and was dreading this kind of responce. Would this trip even be posssible in a car? The snow is what scares me more than anything. The tail end of my bike justs shoots side to side in the snow...it's not as fun as it looks.

This is a big let down. I really do need to get to Montana

Lots of people have done winter trips on motorcycles, but understand the risks before making a adventure shuch as this.
I ride year round in Missouri, and yes, it is possible to ride on snow and ice, but it might be a life threatening situation if the weather conditions are at the worse or you get caught out somewhere in the middle of knowwhere.
If you just have to do it then I would plan on the worse and give yourself a couple weeks to get to your destination.
It would be smart to have lots of places along the way to lay off and wait out the weather if you need to.
Wear good clothing, like Girbings and bring a cell phone w/ a charger just in case.
Just be carefull man, and plan for the worse.

Could you rent a U-Haul truck and put the bike in the back?

While that would be a great experience if you made it, for the amount of money you're going to spend on the proper grear you might as well have the bike shipped there and take a bus this time of year.

Good luck man
