Dakota Digital

Greetings All,

Got a 2000 S3 955i. I love naked bikes and am going to end up stripping my Triple to the bones. Starting with the instrument cluster. Has anyone swapped out their cluster for an after market Digital? If so any helpful hints particular to my beloved S3. I am going to be receiving my Dakota Digital 5000 in the next couple of days. I know I will have to use the magnetic pickup for speed but any hints others have found useful would be appreciated.

I have read in a couple of threads regarding the speed triple wiring being set just on the point of what the default system can handle. I.E. Heat and load. has anyone tried stripping the stock wiring harness off and upgrading the wiring to handle more current / load or is the stock Alternator not capable of adding say additional running lights, GPS, heated suit, etc....

Any help would be great as I am the kind of idiot that will do this stuff F-bomb it and then have to re-do stuff to get it all to work. (In the end it usually works just I do not have the theoretical knowledge to do any mass planning when it come to rewiring. I do understand words like.... not worth the time required or stock wiring is sufficent.LOL.).

Thanks All,
MemphisS3

Installing your Dakota instruments should be pretty straight forward - as you already recognize you will have to install a Hall-effect drive sender for it, then also identify all the correct wiring colours for the idiot lights & wire those accordingly. Hopefully you have a copy of the electrical schematic.

I installed a digital drive speedo in this thread - you could use pretty much any sender device, even the one I used. Does not have to be the same model to match your Dakota. Another very clean method would be to use a Speedo Sender from a Triumph Sprint (up to 04 models) - that is a form/fit for your wheel (same fit as your mechanical unit) and easily installed - has three wires, power, speed signal output & ground. Just a consideration if you can find one used on EBay (they are quite expensive new at ~ $170)

I installed a Veypor digital preformance gauge and it works great. It was easy to install if you follow the directions. You know how us man are....if all else fails read the directions.

It does very thing except change your oil for you.

Thanks Gentlemen.

I appreciate the advise and will definitely be looking for the Sprint part as that would be nice (fit and feel).

Outlaw, man I was right there with you on the veypor. That was what started my search for something more. One thing to watch for (or least what made me stop and look elsewhere) they ("Veypor") say their unit is water resistant. Not Water proof. I called them and asked them about this and they said it was correct they are not in a "sealed" case. I mentioned that I ride quite frequently in the rain. The response, should not be a problem but if water kills it you are out of luck... ouch. $$$$$ down the tubes. Only reason I shy ed away. Loved the unit and functionality. I would love to hear what you think with hands on one. Are you concerned about water? May not be an issue if you only get stuck in the rain versus ride in the ride...lol.

MemphisS3:

I think the Veypor is an awesome unit, don't really have to worry about rain here in Phoenix. We only get about .5 inches a year.

Anyway, I have the handlebar thumb controls which makes things easier to change while riding. The dyno mapping info was nice to have and messing with the 1/4 mile runs were fun. I have just hit the tip of the iceburg with it and it's outstanding.

good luck with whatever you get,

JL
