Speed Triple 1050. What`s good about them and bad about them
A new sticky, designed as a resource for potential S3 buyers who are contemplating buying the world`s best naked bike. Feel free to post your experiences and opinions of the model. I`ve made it about the 1050, rather than the 955, as it`s still in production and will be relevant to the new and s/h bike buyer.

PRO:
A good lookin bike with a single sided swing arm and aftermarket looking wheels for a low price.

CON:
The adjustment on the forks for compression and rebound are on different forks such as they've done with the new kwaka Z1000. This they did to keep the cost down I'm guessing.

Not certain about the 05-06 by my 07 responded very well to a better flowing exhaust. I bought an Akrapovic Titanium Megaphone thats made for an 06-07 R6, fabracated a connector pipe and the results were amazing. I removed everything from the right footpeg back and installed the megaphone with in the typical Moto-GP style location. I couldn't get in on the Dyno, Arizona Victory couldn't figure out how to put it on the Dyno without a spark plug wire to connect to. Seat of the pants improvement is obvious though, with bottom end torque being the most obvious improvement.
With the stock exhaust, when I snapped the throttle open quickly the front end came up at about 3/4 throttle, now its up at less than half. Midrange is definitely better and top end feels close to the same. Strange, you'd expect a pipe like the Akrapovic Megaphone would make mostly top end, but I swear it feels like the biggest gain was 3-6000 rpm, with smaller gains everywhere else too.

Oh, forgot to add that its LOUD. Not so bad at low load, low rpm but when you twist the throttle its almost as loud as a Harley.

Pics of the Akra on the S3, please?
Is there any baffle in the thing at all or is the can as empty as it looks on the pic?

Did you weld a bung for the Lambda on your custom midpipe or remove sensor completely?

I broke my femur about two weeks ago going over a double on my CR500 so I could get the bike outside for a good pic, and my wife won't touch it, shes afraid she will drop it if she tries to push it. I had her just take a pic where it is, so its not the best pic. Anyway, the pipe comes with a removable baffle, which helps make it just a little less obnoxious, and comes out in 30 seconds if you wanna wake up the neighbors. The lambda bung is in its stock location, i didnt have to move any sensors. I just bought an 8 inch peice of exhaust tubing, cut a very narrow v halfway through it, bent it and welded over the cut so that it was at the correct angle to keep the pipe tucked in nicely.

I like it...............
Looks like you just put on a new rear tire, I'm getting close to having to do the same.
Thinking about switching to a Metzler Z6's because of the odd way my front is wearing.
How do'es your front tire look?
Sorry for the hijack..........

Wind blast. Good & bad.
Many prospective buyers ask about the wind blast.
I no longer even notice it under 100mph. But it does make going anywhere near top speed incredibly uncomfortable (for me at least). You have to remember top speed is about 150mph, so personaly I believe its good the wind blast keeps me a little honest. I'd reckon I'd be tempted to do more high speed runs if it wasn't pushing the helment against my nose.

+1

I haven't been able to ride consistently since I bought the bike in September, I've logged 2,200 miles though, but I know that having a neck like a linebacker would help a ton.

Gas mileage isn't the greatest, though I might have something to do with the fact that I find I'm constantly trying to reach the speed limit as fast as humanly possible. Something about wacking the throttle just makes my nipples hard.
