Disassembling '01 Forks

Just took down my S3 fork to do the seals. I was surprised to find that there is almost no spring tension on the spacer jam nut etc. I am accustomed to the cartridge forks with a small spacer and hole for the spring compressor to relieve the spring tension while loosening the jam nut. The showa forks with my s3 have a big spacer there was almost no tension. I to out all the spacers by hand. The lack of tension seemed odd to me but I'm not exactly a suspension guru.

Anyone that has more experiences working with these forks know anything about the design of these and what they should be like.

Thanks,

Lee
