Problem with throttle. Help?

Hey all,

I changed my handlebars over on my Speed Triple, and for some reason, the throttle now sticks, or worse, revs ridiculously high when I start my bike.

When the throttle is not on the new handle bars, I can turn it, but as soon as I put it on, it sticks and won't turn/rev at all.

Does anyone have ANY clue as to what this may be? It is very illogical in my head, and I don't want to spend $$$ if it's something I can fix on my own.

I've changed handle bars before, but never had this issue.

Can someone PLEASE help me out? This is really frustrating, as you may imagine.

Cheers.

Throttle cables too tight? Handlebar thicker than previous one? Throttle so close to barend weight that they rub on each other?

Handlebars definitely the same - don't understand the throttle being close to barend weight...?

Unsure about the cable - it's being temperamental.

Could there be anything else? Or am I looking at one of those three?

My immediate thought was the angle might now be greater and causing a kinking of the cable in the housing.

Try loosening it off in place on the handlebar but not tight. It might be the cable binding on the housing or pinching somewhere else.

I'd pull the bar end off and try it without it on as well..

Good luck

If i try it with the throttle detached from the bar i can get it to idle fine. If i put it on the bar, the throttle doesnt move at all. If i fiddle with the throttle with the bike turned off i can get the throttle to move and yet when i start the bike, its hits its rev limiter straight away. THis is really frustrating me.

For me, this happened too when I installed Rizoma fat bar and billet grips.

I lubricated inside the throttle grip and the linkage as well as loosened the throttle adjustment. Adjusting the throttle cable made the biggest difference. You MAY have to grind/sand down the inside of the throttle grip and handle bar area SLIGHTLY. But try lube and adjusting the cable...be patient and adjust as needed until the throttle snaps back to zero each time.

not illogical, here's why

In college (90's) my only transportation was a 1979 Honda CB650. Those things come stock with "wheelbarrow" handlebars. Needless to say, that meant there was an abundance of extra throttle cable. I switched to Ace bars, flat bars, etc. The difference is that our S3's do not come with apehangers, so they have a minimum of extra throttle cable for handlebar changes. So there are two potential sources of your problem. In classic troubleshooting technique, we'll go with the easiest/cheapest fix first (even if it's not the most likely):
(1) your throttle grip is binding on your bar end. The bar end is the weight at the end of your handlebar. Loosen or remove it, and see if the problem persists. If so...
(2) you don't have enough slack in your throttle cable. Remedy: use the throttle cable adjuster to give you as much slack as possible. Rotate the bars to see if you can find a position where the cable doesn't stick / rotates freely. Worst case scenario -- your new bars are too wide / wrongly formed to use with your stock throttle cable. Your choice then is to either (a) buy / install a new longer throttle cable or (b) go back to your old handlebars that lacked this problem. I apologize for (b) if you were just replacing the stock bars with more stock bars (maybe you bent the originals or something?), your original post didn't indicate the difference, if any, in bars. Best of luck to you -- this can be frustrating, but just take your time and walk away for a while if need be. It will all work out, and you'll have a rideable motorcycle before long.

What is the throttle cable adjuster? Is that the metal screw type thing about half way down the cable? And which way make it tighter and which way looser.
As for bard ends, i havent put any on yet, so it must be a cable tension problem. The new handlebars are not stock but they are pretty much the same length, maybe 1 inch longer than stock bars, would that be enough to effect it?

The biggest problem with the whole set up is the setting up the cable inside the housing. With the housing held together loosely and the throttle not attached to the bars i can rev the throttle nicely. As soon as i put it on the bars, with the engine running, the throttle handle no longer moves/slides as it should. The 'jamming' feels like something in the housing rather than too much tension in the cable.

I already broke my screw driver and my door tonight i got so angry about this. Thankyou to those who have offered ideas.

If the new bars are longer that may be the problem with too much pull on the cables now. Sometimes I find it better to walk away for awhile when I get frustrated with a job or I'll screw something up and cause myself a bigger problem.

If it's the same problem I had when I changed my bar out last week, it's quite possible that the rubber on the throttle is rubbing against the bar ends making it stick.

If you loosen the screws that bind the throttle housing to the bar and move it a few millimeters away from the end of the bar, and while holding it in place with one hand, tighten the screws with the other so it doesn't slip back down...should hopefully resolve your problem...This was mentioned before, but again, happened to me and after 5 minutes of troubleshooting, got it to work.

cheers
