what to bring on a weekender?

i'm going on a weekend trip (approx 1000 mi)
and was wondering if anyone has any advise/tips
on what to bring along for emergencies etc..
of course i'll have the triumph tool kit with me
along with a leatherman but maybe there are
some other tools and whatnot that could come in
handy?

I cant speculate on the specific enviromental demands your trip would have, which, other than some basic tools, is likely the biggest issue. just be prepaired for any weather you would be likely to encounter. I usually dont travel with rain gear, but many times i have wished i did.

a few little things i have found handy :

small flashlight (check out surefire. the surefire g3 is not much larger than a roll of quarters, and is far FAR brighter than a 4 dcell mag light, with a light output closer to a battery power spotlight. best part: a bargin at 35$, worst part, eats batteries fast. its great in nighttime emergencies)

a bandana/ hankerchif (whether im drying wet feet, cleaning bug cakes off my headlights, or tying off an injury, i have found a little peice of cloth to be a versitile and loyal travel companion)

a flask of whiskey (im not advocating drunk riding, but last season i had a rear tire blowout in remote iowa, and ended up sitting a field for hours waiting for a ride, and boy o boy was i glad i was able to pass the time with a few drinks)

some duct tape (great for solving problems with torn or damaged luggage or backpacks, but mostly valuable for the millions of situtations you cant think of untill they happen)

i dont always travel with all these things, but each has been useful in its own situtation.

Here are a few things I bring on trips out of state. You can get realy small, lightweight stuff that is used for backpacking fairly cheap at an outdoor store. All of this fits in a regular sized backpack with extra room to spare -

2 or 3 small bottles of water
a few high calorie food bars
Mini pocket sized radio with headphones and batteries
small rechargeable squeeze flashlight
lighter and/or a few waterproof matches
rain gear and/or poncho
multi-function knife - Leatherman type
soap, toothbrush, toothpaste
first aid kit - bandages, anti-bacterial stuff
deck of playing cards
tire plug kit and Co2 inflators
thin 5x5 plastic drop cloth - makes a decent tent in an emergency
10 feet of nylon cord
sunglasses
maps

other stuff depending upon where you're riding to ???

Wink

Now that i think about it, the topic of flashlights merits more discussion than i have provided. here is some food for thought

(for the record, i worked at a outfitter that was, among other things, a surefire dealer, so i have lots of experiance with these super cool gadgets)

the G2 (i wrongly called this the g3 in previous post)

Price is about 35 bucks at a sporting goods store. This flashlight is super tough and mega bright. Its battery life isnt great, but its like packing a halogen construction light in your pocket. like most surefire products its also upgradable. accessories like lenses and led conversion bulbs allow you to customize this light for your personal needs. you can even install the shock isolated tooth bezzel, which makes the g2 not only a great flashlight, but a devistating striking weapon. speaking of defense, the G2 high output lamp ups the light output to a blinding 120 lumens, which is suprisingly effective in self defense situtations. my friend has caught my offguard with it a few times, and a 120 lumen blast of light to the face is beyond disorenting, it makes your brain hurt.

an LED version of the g2 is also available with much better battery life

Avaitor A2

This one is my fav, but much more expensive at about 180 bucks. This light has all the features of the G2, plus a compact anodized body, and a hybrid system that combines a high output xeon bulb, with LED lights (your chioce of color, the avaitor designation is partially due to the availability of red LEDs to prevent night blindness in pilots). This light has a pressure switch on the hilt of the light. half pressure activate the low intensity LEDs, and full pressure activated the powerful xeon beam. the beauty of this system allows for casual, close range, use of the led lights that use very little battery time, and still have the ability to switch to the intense light when it is nessesary.

E1E

Another cool surefire. not as intense as the previous lights, but super compact, and still has light output equal to or greater than a large d cell flashlight.

in short, these things are on my top 5 list of cool gadgets. I give surefires as gifts sometimes, and i am yet to see someone receive one that isnt just blown away by its construction, light output, and all around cool factor.

a note on batteries: the batteries are not your everyday alkaline duracells, but cost about the same as brand name AAs, and are available at most decent sporting goods stores and online, both in 2 packs and bulk cases. Surefire also makes a line of rechargable lights (expensive as hell though)

one last note. i was NOT paid by surefire to post this

Chain lube. Honda lube in the small can, very easy to stash. A few paper towels.
