Question Toasted Stator

Anybody have any issues with their stator. I picked up a 06 S3 Demo bike this spring with 500 miles and put another 4000 on it. Then it stopped charging the battery. Dealer drained the oil and it smelled really burnt. Opened up the altenator cover and the lower section of the stator was toast. Any thoughts as to the cause. It was all covered under warranty but I need to understand WHY & HOW to feel better.

Just had mine replaced under warranty. There was an '05 in with the same thing.

No damage like yours however I caught it pretty quick, or rather it caught me pretty quick with the dead battery routine. There is a long and bitter story about the three times it was in the shop with me trying to convince the apes of the problem. They eventually got it right. I hope.

we'll see soon about mine. I may have the same issue. I thought it may be the regulator rectifier, but I had another member send me his(thanks limey! and it didn't cure my issue. So now I'm think'n the same thing with mine. And guess what, my warranty runs out today! Although, I think I have the part worked out. I'll keep ya posted.

Hey cheap, the bike was not made to ride like a unicycle=too many long wheelies?? Actually I burnt out my stator a long time ago.

Just having this issue now. Thought my battery was dying so got a new one and then two days later wouldn't start again.
My mechanic says it's most likely the strator so the battery is not being charged and needs to be replaced.
I've been doing some searching and other people have mentioned that the charging relay could be blown so I looked in the service manual and saw which one it is but it looks exactly like all the others. Nothing burned or anything like that. Checked all the fuses and they're also all fine.
Someone else mentioned frayed wiring but everything once again looks fine and when I first got the battery it's started instantly no problem. Was only after two days and maybe ten starts that the problem happened.
Any chance that it's something other than the strator? Maybe the rectifier? How can I tell?
Reason I'm reaching for straws here is that the strator is not so cheap to replace.
Thanks for the help!

You've got new battery... did you charge it after installation? Or just dropped-in, went for few short rides without battery having chance to recharge from startups?
Check the battery voltage (you can get el-cheapo multimeter in Harbor Freight for approx $3-5). If it rises above 13.5V after you fire up engine your system is charging. First, of course, put battery on battery tender to recharge it. If there is no charging, then you have charging problem. That could be many issue here, just saying that this is stator without looking into it is too simplistic.

The battery was put on the charger overnight so it was fully charged when I installed it.

(It's a stator by the way)
The first concern is your mechanic says it's most likely to be the stator - good mechanic should be able to determine precisely what the probem is.

Anyway, lot's of good diagnostic info for you in this thread - priciples are exactly the same, even though different model.

As to cost, replacement stator from Rick's (referenced in the thread) is about $140 if you find that you really do need one.

Just picked up my bike today and it turns out it was the stator (replaced under warranty). I had checked the voltage (on the battery terminals while running) with a multimeter and it never went above about 12.5 so I was pretty sure it was the stator.
Jeff at South Bay Triumph said that he had seen quite a few go bad and that apparently Triumph had a gotten a pretty large batch of bad stators in the 06's and 7's so these have been replaced with no problems because it's a known problem.
Anyway, back on the road again and very very happy.
BTW I was pretty impressed with Jeff at South Bay, really seemed to know his stuff. They are a little pricey but I will give them a try for my next scheduled service and see how it goes. Got the impression that they are pretty detailed oriented and will check over everything instead of just fixing the obvious issues.
I had been using Miles (DIA Motorsports) at British Customs and he's very reasonable and does good work but you have to specify exactly what you want done so on a couple occasions I had to go back because there was another problem that wasn't fixed the first time around that would have been caught if he had done a thorough check the first time. But, of course you only get charged for what he actually does and is very fair. You just need to be very specific on what you want him to do.
