The first concern is your mechanic says it's
most likely to be the stator - good mechanic should be able to determine
precisely what the probem is.
Anyway, lot's of good diagnostic info for you in
this thread - priciples are exactly the same, even though different model.
As to cost, replacement stator from Rick's (referenced in the thread) is about $140 if you find that you really do need one.
