I've searched but I'd like some opinions. I totaled my poor Street Triple R a couple months ago and I'm on the hunt for a new bike now. I want something a little bigger and better on long rides so the Speed seems like a natural choice. I was commuting by bike so I'm getting a bit antsy to not have to sit in traffic again.
I emailed my dealer about the 16s and they said they'll arrive sometime in February and I'd be looking at ~$17.5k OTD (California). It's a nice bike that seems steep considering what else is available in that price range. There are zero used Rs around but quite a few leftover 14s/15s. Seems like I could save a couple grand over a new 16 and I don't care about ride modes or the power bump that much but I do prefer the new look. Obviously no one has ridden a 16 yet but what kind of pricing are people getting on leftover Speeds? Any compelling reason I'm missing to wait and pay up for a 2016? Thanks!
I don't have a lot to tell you, but last time I checked in with the Triumph dealer in Reno (Freedom Cycle), they still had a leftover 2013 Speed Triple brand new and seem to be looking to do a deal. It's a black one. Sharp looking bike. Couldn't hurt to give them a call.
The extra goodies that will be on the new 2016 would be nice but for what you would pay for a left over 2014 thru 2015 is hard to justify IMO.
Gear shift indicator, fly by wire and all the goodies with that. Added power, cruise control.
Sounds tempting but for for a couple thousand less I'd pick up a leftover.
If the looks mean that much to you, I would suggest you wait or you will likely be disappointed. But I bought my 2010 in December of 2011. It sat new on the showroom floor for almost two years so I got one hell of a deal. And I am just as happy as can be with mine. I can't imagine I would have been happier with a new 2012 model (in fact I prefer the round headlights).
On the other hand, I chose to pay a premium for my Rocket X over a great deal on a left over 2013 Roadster. I got caught up in the whole "Special Edition" craze...
If the headlights are the prime factor making the new one more attractive to you, could you not simply get a great deal on a left over and then replace the headlights later?
If you haven't ridden a '12 - '15, you really should. I know the '16s are tempting with all of the new do-dads, but the previous generation S3s are just so damn capable and fun! This is especially true if you get the R with the suspension upgrade.
If you have the cash and like the newest stuff...wait for the 16. If cost is a consideration, I don't think you could possibly go wrong finding a '13, '14, or '15 R.
Ride modes? I doubt I'd ever be out of sport anyway. Throttle by wire? The fueling is so good on my '12 I doubt I'd notice. More power? Maybe. That would be nice....but I'm very satisfied as is. Looks? I definitely like the '16 better.
You can save a bundle and the fun factor on a '15 or earlier is phenomenal.
I haven't ridden the older Speed yet but I definitely will before deciding. My local dealer is only going to be ordering S models of the new Speed for their first shipment so they said if I want an R I'll have to preorder. Hence the thread prior to me riding anything.
Yeah, add heated grips and cruise control and forget the traction nonsense. Ok, ABS is a good thing so leave that.
Like I said there is no perfect bike out there, each one has some drawbacks, its just finding your comprimise.
You can really just add a throttle lock to the older bike right? I assume with the new RBW the aftermarket will do a real cruise for the 2016s at least.
Get a leftover as mentioned......since you are in So. Cal you should checkout LA Cyclesports...I picked up a leftover 2012 there for $10,999 OTD & they threw in some extras.

Everyone I know with ride modes just leaves it in one setting anyway.
I'd love to have a gear indicator but I've managed so long without one it's really not worth spending 7,000 to trade.
I would have liked to see self cancelling turn signals. Liked that feature on my Explorer. Cruise and heated seat was nice too.

If your not doing track days even spending the extra $3500. for a leftover may be a waste of money. My 2013 has smooth fueling and I can't imagine a time I wished for ride modes and my 160 hp gtl has traction modes and I leave it in dynamic all the time. I paid $13,200. OTD for my leftover in march 2014 and I could have saved another $700. if I hadn't wanted the SE so bad. Looking around I believe you could get a new leftover for 10k. I like the looks of the 2016 a lot also but until they package another 40 hp with it it's overpriced. IMO
Same thoughts here. A leftover with "All you need" extras, including the Arrows-Exhaust is available for 11.000 Euros. The new model is only an option if it's beefed up to at least 145 hp. 10 extra horses, like they did with the Tiger Sport.
I don't know if you'd be interested in a private sale but I'm in SoCal and have been thinking about selling my 2103 R ABS. I just don't ride it enough to justify the cost of ownership. If you're interested send me a PM.
That's actual super tempting then. I'll have to see if it's true when the full specs are released (gotta be soon right?). Right now it looks like dugsgms and I are going to be able to work out a deal on his bike which keep me happy for a while.
Has anyone gotten a good deal on the 2016 Speed Triple R in CA? I'm set on picking one up in September and have searched everywhere for more information on the OTD Price, but haven't found any valuable information yet.
I'd go with the 2016 myself, its lighter, a little more power, looks great etc. I really love what they did with the new S3 especially with the look.
Although myself I think my next bike will be a monster 1200R just for a change, the black one looks incredible.
