Riding in the HEAT!
Other than staying indoors with the A/C on max does anybody have any good tips for keeping safe and sort of cool in this 100 degree heat wave ??
It is very uncomfortable for me to ride in the very hot weather. I usually forego safety a bit by wearing just a T-shirt, summer gloves, blue jeans with light boots, and of course my open face Arai helmet.
Right now , i am staying off the bikes -too **** hot!

I drink plenty of water. Hydration is king. I also wear my Raptor jacket and pray that I don't get stuck in any stop-go traffic, which in Atlanta is hard not to.
To that end, it's actually better to be covered, then wide open to the sun and wind. Not to mention, I hear melanoma sucks arse.

We generally haven't had too much of a problem this year with the heat, it's been more like ensuring you don't drown or get washed away while on the bike.
In what heat we've had I use my Joe Rocket UFO jacket which like an armoured tea-bag. Great ventilation and you don't really notice it.

It depends how fast my ride is. I always wear a jacket no matter what. If I'm riding at speed the whole time, a perf'd leather jacket works great. If it's city/stop and go I'll throw a mesh jacket on. Also wear cotton not coolmax. The coolmax is great at keeping you dry, but then you don't get the advantage of the evap cooling off your skin.
I've also starting riding with a camelback. It's amazing how fast you dehydrate when riding in vented gear.

Icon makes a vest with shoulder and back armour that sells for about $100.
Of course that leaves your elbows/arms unprotected but they also have elbow pads. Downside is you will resemble someone from a madmax movie. Or maybe that's not a downside.

+1 on gear and staying hydrated. I had a ride where I almost passed out before I could get to a mall to sit and drink 6 glasses of water....and their a/c was broken that day
Bring water, stop to drink and cool off. I also soak my shirt underneath my jacket (it's an under armor hot weather shirt). I find this is enough to get through most days. I don't ride when it's 114 anymore though

If riding in the heat makes you forego safety by wearing just a T-shirt, summer gloves, blue jeans with light boots, and an open face helmet, maybe you shouldn't ride in the heat? I mean, do you ride when it's too cold?
Staying off the bike in that extremely hot weather seems very reasonable to me. Where's the pleasure otherwise?
