Do you guys stink?

Installed Chain Reaction Pipes last week... Unbelievable sound and performance increase!!! But the exhaust smell is now quite bad. I went for an hour or so drive down to the bike show in Carlisle PA yesterday. Pretty cool show by the way... Out of the 10s of thousands of bikes there, I saw two other S3s. One at a dealer booth and the other was a hot pink parked in the sea of bikes. Pretty cool having a rare bike!

Anyway... When I got home, my skin, hair, clothes, and jacket smelled quite badly of exhaust fumes... Didn't notice the odor with the stock cans. My friends also told me that when I cranked on the throttle a cloud of black smoke came from the back of my bike. Could this be the culprit? Or is the smell and the smoke normal?

I don't mind showering when I get home from a ride, but I would still like to ride my bike to work. Without having the smell of exhaust offend my potential clients.

PS. If you don't have Chain Reaction pipes yet... Get on the phone with BOB! You won't regret it. The Wow factor is incredible!

Thanks guys

Did you re-tune the bike after you installed the exhaust? if not, well...there's your culprit.

Had the same trouble with my daytona and aftermarket pipe. I narrowed it to two problems. First, the high mounted can blows exhaust in the slip stream and swirls around to marinate you in exhaust gas. Not much you can do. Second. The Triumph tune that was installed with the new pipe was waaaay to rich and extremely stinky. I reset the tune to stock and installed a power commander to get the right fuel map. Major improvement.

Now the exhaust is only slightly stinky (from the slipstream swirl). Before when I rode to work, I couldn't be in the same room with my jacket. It was sufficating. Now I have to put my nose into it to barely smell it.

good luck.

You're running too rich. The black smoke on acceleration is a tell-tale sign.

I did re-tune the bike using Tuneboy and tune 20132 (Arrow wo/sai) based on Bob's recommendation. Any additional ideas? If it is running rich how can fix the problem?

PS. My bike is an 07 so I am limited to the tunes available on the Tuneboy download page (VIN 281466 to 305059). I did try to put some of the custom tunes from the download page on this forum but that are apparently not compatible with my ECU.

Thanks

Couple of options:

Option 1 is to modify the Arrow tune through TuneEdit to reduce the amount of fuel added. There are some pretty good instructions on the other forum under Tuning section if you need help.

Option 2 is to try Tunes 20127 and 20128 and compare the results after a couple days of riding each. These tunes should be leaner due the ehxaust style used. Logic would say that 20127 would be the leanest and 20128 would be a little more rich, but leaner than the Arrow tune you are running now. I've never looked at the above maps to verify, but you can through TuneEdit. I find the 3D graph window will give me a good overview of the mapping at a quick glance.

When I first put my Chains on, I ran a tune made by a member that custom made a tune called "20088Base2_DVS_1050precat_removed.dat" and it ran pretty rich. I had the same symptoms you are describing. Worked alright in the winter, but got worse at the temps warmed up. After changing to another tune "TuneBoy Arrow Tune" and modified it to fit my bike, I'm running pretty good now.

I have an '07 with CRM pipes. My bike, being Aussie, is non-SAI. I loaded the 20128 tune, which I have been running for ~400km. I thought it was all great, butt hen yesterday, after riding in heavy traffic at low RPM's the bike started running really rough, smelling and blowing out some black smoke.

My guess is that it's running rich, which becomes more noticeble when hot. I'm thinking my plugs might be fouled from running rich (explaining the rough running at low revs).

Point is I think the 20128 tune is still rich. I might try the 20127 tune.

I have my eye on this thread, 'cause at the moment I can bearly rid ethe bike the way it is

Hey Jonty G...

Are you using CRM's dual or single can setup? I thought I was the only one so far to have a modified mid-pipe from Bob to fit an 07 S3...

Anyway, I tried running 20128 yesterday. It was the worst my bike has ever run. I could barely get to 100 mph in third gear. So I went back to the 20132 (arrow wo/sai). It may be running a little rich but at least it runs.

I am going to have my bike dynoed and remapped next Wednesday. I might have a tune you can use after that.

PS. It stinks we can't use any of the proven tunes for 06 and earlier bikes with our "new" ECU. I guess we are the guinea pigs!

Will let you know the results...

I'm using the dual cans. My '07 came out with the old style mid-pipe, with the vertical O2 sensor in the midpipe, so I was able to use the current CRM midpipe

I'll give the arrows tune a go...
