hey up fellas
i have a 2006 speed triple 1050 im working on for a customer and it has a intermittant cutting out problem,on a lot of the earlyer bikes the ignition pick up coil fails quite often and ive replaced a lot of those,i was wondering if anyone with the 1050 has had problems with that unit?or is there any other common failed electrical componant that you know of?
cheers

Hey Adepackett - Can't say I have any specific knowledge on this area, but I do have just a general observation/question along the same lines:
Does anyone else think that the fact that the '05 & '06 Speed Triples have to be cranked 2-3 times (at length) just to start would seem to stress the ignition, battery and electrical system more than is healthy? And potentially lead to premature ignition coil failures down the line?
My .02...

I doubt that having to crank the bike a couple times or seconds stresses the electrical system other than putting more wear on the starter motor.
My last 2 bikes were Yamaha FZ-1s and it always was a hard to start bike when cold. One of my FZ's had 40,000 miles and the other 20,00 and the starters never failed.

The pickup coil resistance spec is 560 ohms +/-10% at 20 degrees C. 640 ohms hot does not sound too high depending on how hot you are talking about.

ahhhh
thanks for that resistance figure,it appears the coil is ok at this point, where did you find that info if you dont mind me asking?triumph figures are hard to track down sometimes......
all 7of the 1050s i work on have the delay in starting,i dont think its a issue myself as long as it fires, its not gonna hurt anything......

Yes, BigRedandRiding, I agree, the stock battery is good, but inadequate to the bike. I am searching for a better battery.

I was wondering what you mean by the cut out problem? Reason I ask is that just today when I was going to work I left my garage (after that 3 sec ignition crank as always.) and rode down the block just fine. As I approached a stop sign I clutched in and let off the throttle and it stalled/died. Cranked it up for a few seconds and it fired up and stalled again like it had no idle at all. I rode it home ok but I had to hold the throttle open a little to keep it from stalling.
Would that be similar to the cutting out of the ignition you are speaking of?

I've heard of the engine kill swithc having intermittant shorts or defective connections that turn the engine off suddenly. Loose/shoddy connections within the housing.
I've also heard of the switch at the kickstand going all wacky as well which would shut th eengine off.
Check those switches yet?
While you're at it, test the tip over kill switch if this bike has one.
Good luck!

Switch at kickstand? I can start mine with the stand up. '06. Am I not supposed to?
