I've been having an ongoing problem with my 2004 Speed Triple following a minor (optional) service, and after much time with the mechanics it's better but still not right. My bike misses on start up from cold, continues to idle roughly when warmed up and feels relatively gutless below 4000 rpm. Whilst I don't mind dropping gears to pull away, one of the Triple's features was is torque, and my perception is that it's not what it was.

Am I imagining things? Is this the norm for a 955 motor with 17,000 kms? Any ideas? :???:

Shutter definitely not the norm, it "should" pull well from about 3k RPM.

There are a couple of things to check, most important is the inlet manifolds, that one hasn't kinked when they fit the airbox back up. It's hard to see and will cause this kind of thing. Next is the throttle body balance and the stepper motor. If it's missing, one of these is likely the cause, if it's not that, it could be a southbound plug, or a coil that's faulty or not fitted correclty.
If you're not happy with it, take it back and back and back until it's right, but if it's a big dealer, then you'll probably have little luck. You may be better taking it to a local indpendant, they're usually more careful and will find the cause straight away.

Perhaps find another 04 rider and see what theirs goes like?

Thanks for the advice miker. I have kept going back, but I am dealing with a big dealer. They rebalanced throttle bodies at least once; they tried hotter plugs; they had the head reconditioned because the 1 and 3 cylinders were showing a high loss in a leak down test. They've had the bike for 23 days in the past 2 months.

Do you know of a good independent in the Melbourne area?

Are there any '04 Triple owners in Melbourne who would like to do a comparison?

See if you can get a PM to Legman, he's been around in Melbourne a bit and may know of someone other than Steven's if that's where you've been going.

Sorry I don't know any more, but the head rebuild sounds a bit suspect. My old '99 did over 100,000kms without the head ever being off. Even just calling a couple of local shops and talking to them might give you some inkling as to whether they're any good or not.

My 03 pulls really hard at about 3200 RPM hence the wheelies. Mine idles rough but I just figured that was due to the torque specific cams. I noticed the last time I filled up with fuel from a different station and 91 octane it seemed to perform and idle a little better also started up easier. Please don't bash me about the fuel Stuff. Could have just been a quinky dink.
