I have a BMW that I put about 20k miles on last year, including a trip to Alaska, and one to Baja. I've been hankering for something for street oriented trips as opposed to the dualsport that I ride the BMW for. I've been out looking at ST1300's, a Triumph ST, BMW RT's, etc. Then a thought hit me. Since I'm not too overly concerned with 2-up ability, why not use my S3? I've ridden it about 500 miles in a day and it was fine. I think I'm going to order me a rear tail bag from Luggagelocker and use the speedy for a few weeklong road trips.

Cany anyone reccomend a more comfortable seat for a 02 Speedy?

I don't want to install a centerstand unless I have to due to the aesthetics of them on the speedy. I obviously can't take the stand or lift on the road with me. Any suggestions on lubing the chain on the road?

Go for it. I just 850 miles in two days on my S3. Picked up a used Sargent seat it was bareable all day. The stock seat tore me up before 100 miles.

Used the Triumph panniers and they worked great. They are a bit small compared to the suitcase bags on my 1976 BMW tho. If I was going a long ways I'd probably still take the R90.

But I was really surprised at how comfy the S3 was sport touring. I might want to move the pegs down an inch or so, but besides that it was perfect.

I use my old school '00 S3 for everything. It will do long days just fine with the appropriate mods. I have Nelson-Rigg luggage and a fleece covered gel seat. It also helps to ride when it's cool outside. But you already knew that.

Where is a good source for a Sargent seat for an 02? I'm having trouble finding them online.

I just got back from a 150 mile evening ride, had a blast. It was about 93deg when I left, a bit cooler on the way home. I live in eastern Washington and have a lot of deserted backroads to ride, and the speedy loves them.

I have a Garmin 376C mounted on my BMW. I can get a Ram mount for the center of the handlebars on the speedy, and a short arm and use it on it too. I'm just not sure I'd like the looks of it on the speedy.

Anyone try the luggagelocker tail bag? Les, the ownere seems like a great guy, and he has an outstanding reputation for customer service.

They seem to show up on eBay every once in a while. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you can order direct from Sargent.

For lubing your chain on the go check out the Lift-N-Lube. Fits in the hollow axle and raises the rear wheel off the ground just enough to spin the tire and lube your chain. The only problem w/it on the Speedy is that the axle moves w/the wheel, but I haven't had any problems with it other than scratching inside the axle. But it's small and handy.

PS - here's the link
Lift - N - Lube
