I was riding today home from school, and the light for the engine management system malfunction came on and STAYED on.

The bike does not seem different or anything. But luckly i was 2 miles from home.

Anyone know what is up? What can I do to fix it?

How many miles are on your bike? It could just be a service reminder to let you know it is time for your ____ miles maintenance like in cars. Check your manual and give a thorough look over the bike.

odds are that the system has detected some type of fault. the dealer can read the fault-code with a diagnostic tool. i think (but am not sure) that someone with a tune-boy can also read the fault code for you.

if it is a non-recurring fault, 3 warm-up/shut-down cycles will cause the light to turn off and 40 warm-up/shut-down cycles will erase the code from the ecu.

Does the engine light on your triple come on when its time for service??

My bike has 27,400 miles on it now.

I want to take it to a triumph dealer, but they suck. Can a regular shop diagnose the problem?

you can probably forget service reminders, i haven't seen any indication that the MIL shows anything but faults.

ask a non-triumph shop if you choose. they might know whether or not they can access the codes in your bike. i know very little about tuneboy but it's possible that you might have to purchase an access code to read the ecu when using that device on your bike.

if there are no apparent signs of trouble with your bike, you could try going through 3 warm-up cycles to see if the light goes out. maybe a fourth to be sure if the light stays on during the third. i'm unclear as to whether the light goes out during or after the 3rd cycle.

a cycle would be a rise in temp of at least 23 degrees c. and must reach at least 72 degrees c. then turn off the bike untill it cools sufficiently and then start again.

if the light stays on, could you trust your dealer to at least read the error code for you? Even if they don't do the repair, at least you would know what the bike thinks is wrong with it's self.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago - light came on, but the bike was running fine. I dropped it off at my dealer and they checked for fault codes and basically re-booted the computer.

Runs just fine now...

As a side note, I heard that if you shut the bike down with the kill switch instead of the key, it will cause fault codes to develop...

Thanks everyone, im dropping off the triple today. Hopefully it isnt going to be a big deal.

I might have them adjust my valves, not sure if it needs it. But its at 27k, and they were last adjusted at 15k.

Could that be why the light is on? I think I should have adjusted it at 24k, but they seem fine.

Might replace that clutch cable. Its so hard to pull!

Got the bike back.

Took it to my local triumph dealer so they could get it checked it.

Meanwhile I got the 24k service, which included valve adjustments.

Also got 2 tires installed(i provided the tires)

The total was 1,094$.. Thats right over 1 thousand dollars.

And when I took my triple for a spin today, the engine light came back on.

So the reason I took the bike to the dealer was to get the light checked out, they reset it, and I got it back, the light is now on.

What should I do?

I feel ripped off.

YIKES! that seems extremely high but i don't know what is involved in that service. how much did they charge to mount "your" tires? my experience is that shops rap you pretty good for that service.

ok, the fault. they should have read the fault before resetting or clearing, did they tell you what it was?
