So, I want narrower bars, which would be pretty straightforward except that there are inserts about an inch and a half into the inside of each bar. This makes it tough to use bar-end mirrors without some McGuyvering - I'd have to find some sort of different sized rubber bushings for the Napoleons.
So, has anybody removed these? Are they just spot-welded in? Can it be done? Or maybe someone has found a workaround.
Or should I just spend the $60+ for aftermarket bars and hack those?

Go someplace like cyclegear and get a bar, and hack away. That way, you've still got the stock bar in case you decide to go back. You may know somebody with a spare moto-style bar in their garage that you can get cheap, too.

Plus, aluminum bars are much easier to hack.

True. But they are damm fine nuts! :hammer:
So do I go with gold, black, or natural bars? Or just spring for clip-ons. Hmm...

I followed these instructions for installing Napoleons on my wife's TBS, and it worked out great.
http://www.webbikeworld.com/tbird/mirror/mirrors.htm
Alternatively, remove the rubber grommet from the mirrors, and take a hacksaw to the protruding plastic, making the bar-side flush. Then use the original bar-end screw to bolt it all together.
Me, on the other hand, am going to spend some bucks and pick up a spare of Rizoma Reverse Retros.

I think the bar actually gets thicker 1.5" in from the ends, so (obviously) it would be difficult to remove the shoulder. Why not just cut the Napoleons' existing bushings down a bit? I did that after I installed in-bar grip heaters and it worked fine.

Bein' a cheapbastard, I think I'm gonna try an' bodge somethin' up with the stock bars. NinjaRAT and Curmudgeon, if it works, I'll buy y'all a Guinness (one each, of course) with the money I save.
:-g
If that fails utterly, y'all get no beer, and I'll probably go with Renthal streetfighters or Pro Tek clip-ons (if I'm feeling half my age).

Now that I've an opportunity to inspect my '07 closer, it looks as if Napoleans would fit just fine. Had to have the dealer show me the trick about removing the bar-ends, but they appear to be wide open, once the bar-end is removed.
Did this change between the '06 and '07? Hope I'm not mising something, because I have a pair of Napoleans on order.
